Hot-hitting Alyse Rojas earns Big West weekly honors

April 2, 2018

DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman human development major Alyse Rojas was named the Big West Conference Player of the Week for the first time in her career on Monday after a big weekend at the plate helped UC Davis to a league-opening series win in Southern California.

The second Aggie to be honored by the conference this season after classmate Brooke Yanez claimed back-to-back pitcher of the week awards on Feb. 12 and Feb. 19, Rojas became the first UC Davis player of the week selection since Brianna Warner earned the weekly award back on May 8, 2017, and only the seventh in the program's history chosen for the honor since the Aggies began play in the league in 2008.

Reaching base safely in nine of her 12 plate appearances on the weekend at CSUN, Rojas hit .625 (5-for-8) with a pair of walks and was hit by a pitch twice, scoring three runs, launching her first career home run in the series finale, and driving home four.

With two multi-hit games in the series, the Vacaville, Calif., native increased her team-best total to 14 such performances for the season, slugging 1.000 for the weekend with a .750 on-base percentage. Rojas finished 2-for-2 in the opener, including an RBI single in the seventh to make it a one-run game, and added a 2-for-3 day at the plate in the finale, reaching base all four times thanks to an error in the fourth before launching a three-run shot as part of a seven-run fifth that clinched the win.

Rojas enters the second weekend of Big West play as the league's third-best hitter with a .410 average, while standing among the top 10 in slugging (9th, .533), on-base percentage (8th, .462), hits (5th, 43), total bases (9th, 56), and stolen bases (9th, 5).

The Aggies welcome UC Santa Barbara to La Rue Field for a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday (April 7) at Noon, before wrapping up the set with a single game on Sunday (Aprili 8), also at Noon.
