Aggies edge Fresno State in 12-11 thriller

April 11, 2018

FRESNO, Calif. - Junior Taylor Cuenin and freshman Mar Alvear each scored three goals while sophomore attacker Amanda Outcalt scored two goals and an assist in a 5-0 run in the second half, lifting UC Davis to a 12-11 victory over Fresno State in non-conference women's collegiate lacrosse action at the FSU Soccer & Lacrosse Field Wednesday night.

The Aggies improve to 7-5 for the year. The Bulldogs slip to 9-6. This was the first of two straight meetings between the two teams, which will square off in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play on Saturday, April 21.

Junior goalkeeper Grace Richards, coming off an MPSF Defensive Player of the Week award, recorded 11 saves for the contest. Senior Kate Fellner matched Outcalt's total of two goals and scooped up a team-best five ground balls. Junior Shannon Cross and senior Kelsey DeJesus each added goals, with DeJesus leading the Aggies with six draw controls.

Four different FSU players had two goals each while goalie Laurel Maunder recorded 19 saves.

UC Davis fell into an early 3-0 hole and managed to equalize at 4-4 on Alvear's second goal of the first half, but never took the lead until that second-half run. After Ryleigh Bone's goal made it 9-6 for FSU in the 42nd minute, UC Davis responded with five straight goals during the next nine minutes to craft an 11-9 advantage. Lauren Kiszely assisted on two goals late for the 'Dogs but Cuenin's hat trick goal with 3:48.

The Aggies dominated the game in shooting (38-27) and ground balls (26-17), while committing a season-low 11 turnovers.

UC Davis and Fresno State will meet again on April 21 for the Aggies' Senior Day home finale. That game, which begins at 5 p.m., will determine the seeding for the MPSF Championships on April 27-29.
