Softball splits opening day at Aggie Invitational

Box Score March 8, 2018

Box Score - Nevada | Box Score - Utah State | Tournament Central

DAVIS, Calif. -- Host UC Davis collected double-digit hits for the sixth time in a come-from-behind victory in the opener, before dropping a pitcher's duel in the nightcap, posting a 9-4 win over Nevada before falling by a 2-0 score against Utah State to close out day one of the 2018 Aggie Invitational at La Rue Field.

The Aggies, playing their first games in front of the hometown crowd this season, moved to 12-8 overall on the year following the opening day of action, while Nevada fell to 10-11 and Utah State improved to 9-7.

Eight different Aggies finished with hits on the day -- five of those with multiple hits -- as UC Davis snapped a two-game skid in home openers dating back to 2015, improving to 6-5 in such games in the program's Division I history.

The tournament continues with its first full day of play on Friday (March 9) at 9 a.m., with the first of four scheduled games as Nevada takes on Valparaiso. The Aggies will play only one game on Friday, hosting Northern Colorado in the final contest of the day at 3:15 p.m. A full tournament schedule is available here: http://www.ucdavisaggies.com/sports/w-softbl/spec-rel/18-aggie-invitational.html.

GAME 1: UC DAVIS 9, NEVADA 4
Four players finished with multiple hits to power a 12-hit attack for the Aggie offense, and UC Davis erased an early four-run deficit with nine unanswered runs in two big innings en route to a victory over the Wolf Pack.

Freshman left-hander Brooke Yanez (8-2) scattered just three hits and struck out seven in the complete-game victory, with one of the three hits doing the most damage on an Erika Hansen grand slam in the third. However, the animal science major settled down from that point on, allowing just two more base runners on a pair of walks and retiring 14 of the final 15 hitters she faced en route to the win.

While Yanez found her footing, the offense was doing the same, sending 11 batters to the plate in the fourth inning and scoring five times to take the lead for good. A single up the middle, a one-out walk, and another base hit, loaded the bases for Alex Sotomayor, who laced a single to right to break up the shutout. A bases-loaded walk to Alyse Rojas, and a single to left by Aly Gomonet brought the Aggies to within a run, before Ashley Lotoszynski dealt the big blow with a two-run single to right field with two outs for the 5-4 lead.

The UC Davis offense wasn't done there as three straight run-scoring hits from the top of the lineup staked the Aggies to an insurmountable lead as Rojas had another RBI single, Gomonet drove home a pair with a single to right center field, and Isabella Leon delivered a single to center for the final run.

Nevada starter Julia Jensen (6-5) -- the first of three Wolf Pack pitchers on the day -- took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits, walking five and striking out five in 3.2 innings of work.

GAME 2: UTAH STATE 2, UC DAVIS 0
After all the offense in the opener, it was only fitting that a pitcher's duel would break out in the nightcap as UC Davis right-hander Katie Kibby and Utah State starter Delaney Hull went toe-to-toe, with the visitors pulling out a 2-0 victory.

Hull (4-1) tossed a two-hitter, allowing only singles to Leon in the first and fourth innings and stranding six baserunners on the day -- three of those in scoring position over the final four innings.

The Aggies put runners on first and second with two outs in the first and fourth innings, but could not score, while a one-out walk and stolen base in the fifth was left stranded. Maddie Rojas reached on an error to lead-off the sixth, but could not score after a pair of ground balls and pop out ended the game.

Kibby (3-3), meanwhile, retired nine of the first 10 batters she faced before Utah State got on the board in the fourth as a lead-off triple by Jasmine Clarke was cashed in on a sacrifice fly by Stephanie Reed for a 1-0 lead. The sophomore right-hander, who allowed only six hits and struck out five on the day, then stranded four in scoring position over the next three innings before the visitors took advantage of three errors in the seventh for an unearned run to cap the scoring.
