UC Davis falls short to Golden Bears

March 27, 2018

BERKELEY, Calif. - UC Davis junior Ryan Anderson led the UC Davis offense finishing 2-for-4 with 2 RBI while senior Ryan Hooper tallied his third homer of the season, but host California never looked back after taking a 3-0 lead in the fourth, helping the Golden Bears to a 9-3 win over the Aggies on Tuesday night at Evans Diamond in Berkeley, Calif.

UC Davis will open Big West Conference play on Thursday (Mar. 29) at UC Riverside with a 6-13 overall mark, while California improves to 14-9 on the season.

The Golden Bears were first to get on the board on Tuesday night after sophomore infielder Andrew Vaughn tallied his 13th homer of the season-California's 28th-with two outs in the bottom of the third.

After pair of wild pitches put California baserunners at second and third, a single to left field by Cameron Eden brought two more across giving the Golden Bears a 3-0 advantage over the Aggies before the end of the fourth inning.

The fifth brought new life for UC Davis after a lead-off walk, a single from Garrett Kelly on a bunt back to the pitcher, and an error by the California infield loaded the bases for the Aggies. UC Davis then capitalized with a 2-RBI single through the left side off the bat of Anderson to make it 3-2 in favor of the Golden Bears.

California would go on to score two more in the sixth and an additional three in the seventh to take an 8-2 lead before a solo shot to left field by UC Davis senior Ryan Hooper-his third of the season- made it an 8-3 game in the top of the eighth. But a ninth and final run by the Golden Bears in their half of the inning would prove too much to overcome for the Aggies, lifting California to a 9-3 victory.

Junior Ryan Anderson led the UC Davis offense after finishing 2-for-4 at the plate with two singles and two RBI, while freshman Tanner Murray extended his hitting streak to nine consecutive games after finishing 1-for-4 with a lead-off double down the left field line in the Aggies' first at bat. Murray also started off Monday's game against Saint Mary's with a lead-off single to begin the afternoon.

Rogelio Reyes (3-1) was credited with the win for the Golden Bears after allowing two runs on four hits and striking out seven over five innings of work.

After replacing Hannah in the third inning, sophomore right-hander Andres Lara suffered his first loss of the season for UC Davis after allowing three runs on three hits while striking out two over 1.2 innings on the mound.

UC Davis is set to resume action on Thursday (Mar. 29) in Riverside, Calif. to open Big West Conference play against the Highlanders. The series continues on Friday (Mar. 30) at 6 p.m. with the finale beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday (Mar. 31).
