NorCal Challenge Tournament Central UC Davis-Fairleigh Dickinson Box Score | UC Davis-Santa Clara Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - In the opening day of the NorCal Challenge at La Rue Field, hail, Fairleigh Dickinson and Santa Clara were unable to prevent UC Davis from sweeping Friday's games as the Aggies improved to 17-10 on the season by defeating the Knights and Broncos by respective scores of 3-1 and 6-1.

Due to inclement weather that hit the area on Thursday, tournament officials were forced to change the schedule of games for this weekend's event. By doing so, action will now head to Sacramento State for Saturday's four-game slate before returning to Davis on Sunday for the final three matchups. With this new schedule, the Aggies will not return to action until they host Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. -- the first of two games involving the event's co-host.

UC Davis' last game of the weekend is slated for 11:45 a.m. against Santa Clara. The NorCal Challenge will conclude on Sunday when Sacramento State faces the Broncos following that game.

In UC Davis' tournament opener vs. Fairleigh Dickinson, Katie Kibby threw six innings of shutout softball, and allowed only two hits to the Knights before her teammates broke a scoreless tie by hanging three on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth, following a brief delay due to hail.

A leadoff triple by Alex Sotomayor led to the first run of the game when Alyse Rojas earned her 13th RBI of the season by hitting a sacrifice fly to right field. The next three Aggies all reached base safely, starting with Aly Gomonet's single back to the circle, followed by a single to right from Isabella Leon.

Santa Clara chose to load the bases by intentionally walking Ashley Lotoszynski, a decision that backfired when Maddie Rojas drew a nine-pitch walk, which allowed Gomonet to score the eventual game-winning run in the process.

Meghan Bradbury tacked on an insurance run with her single to short, which allowed a diamond full of Aggies to advance one base and Leon to score her team's final run of the game.

Now armed with a three-run lead, Kibby faced six batters in the top of the seventh, allowed only two hits and collected her fifth win of the year when Rylie Schmeh was fanned looking.

In the second game of the day, timely hits from UC Davis helped it score two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, which led to Brooke Yanez' 11th win of the season.

What began in the bottom of the fourth with a Leon walk turned into the first run of the game on a double down the left field line by Siegel. After Gomonet reached on a two-out single, M. Rojas loaded the bases by drawing another base on balls. Caroline Figueroa drove in her team's final run of the frame after she was plunked by the second pitch thrown her way by Santa Clara starter Michael Vierra.

When the Broncos returned to the plate, they were able to load the bases with two outs, but Yanez limited the damage to only one run -- she hit a batter of her own before recording the third out on an Eleni Spirakis pop fly -- stranding three Santa Clara runners in the process on what became their only scoring threat of the game.

After watching SC chop their lead in half, UC Davis extended its lead to a 4-1 margin during its next set of at bats when Leon hit her second home run of the year. Everyone at La Rue Field knew that ball would easily clear the left field fence the minute it left Leon's bat, a swing that gave Yanez some breathing room when she returned to the circle one out later.

But it was the events that took place throughout the bottom of the sixth that chased Santa Clara's pitcher from the circle, and cemented the Aggies' sweep.

A M. Rojas walk became UC Davis' fifth run when Figueroa smacked a single through the right side of the infield; when Bronco right fielder Taylor Burns threw home in a futile attempt to prevent Rojas from scoring, Figueroa advanced to scoring position on a heads-up baserunning play.

Two batters later, Gomonet, who reached base on a single to right field following M. Rojas' walk, scored the final run of the day when A. Rojas hit a single of her that bounced through the right side of the field.

In all, the Aggies recorded four extra-base hits, saw six batters hit .500 against their opposition, saw Leon finish with a 1.250 slugging percentage, and each pitcher record a complete-game victory, striking out a collective 12 batters, while allowing only eight walks combined.
