DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis routed Sacramento State last weekend, 56-13, with junior communication major Jake Maier and sophomore pre-landscape architecture major Dan Whelan playing key roles. And for their outstanding performance against the Hornets, which ultimately led to the Aggies winning their first Big Sky championship, earning the first FCS postseason appearance, and No. 6 seed in this year's playoffs, each received ROOT Sport Player of the Week honors.

Maier collected his second Offensive Player of the Week award of the season by completing 37 of 46 passes for a career-high 478 yards and no interceptions. He threw four touchdowns, ran for another two, and was responsible for 42 of the Aggies' 56 points - the second-highest team total out of the 65 Causeway Classics played.

Whelan picked up his third Special Teams Player of the Week award after playing an integral role in last weekend's rivalry game. He averaged 42.8 yards per kick, dropped three of those punts inside the 20, recorded a long of 58 yards and held Sacramento State to zero return yards.

Monday's announcement, by league officials, pushes football's Player of the Week total to seven, a new single-season program record that topped last year's total of five. Whelan's three individual awards are the most received by any Aggie in one season during the program's Big Sky era.
