DAVIS, Calif. - The wildfires throughout California have been devastating, and we are deeply sympathetic to the families and communities that have been impacted. UC Davis Athletics has supported the efforts of the UC Davis Fire Department to gather donations to help fire victims in Butte County.
We are monitoring forecasts to understand if poor air quality will impact the Causeway Classic football game, which is scheduled to kick-off on Saturday at 12 p.m.
We are closely watching the AQI and will continue to abide by the well-established NCAA guidelines that govern air quality. We are in constant communication with the Big Sky Conference about the game, and are evaluating contingency plans should a necessary change in the game time or location takes place.
UC Davis Athletics will communicate an update by 10 a.m. (PT) on Friday, after reviewing updated forecasts.
The health and safety of our student-athletes is of utmost importance, and we have taken measures to adjust outdoor activities throughout this week. The NCAA Committee on Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports published clear NCAA guidelines about air quality that define how outdoor activities should be modified or canceled.
UC Davis Intercollegiate Athletics has followed these guidelines consistently in the past and is continuing to do so. Outdoor activities are modified when the Air Quality Index (AQI) exceeds 150 and canceled if the AQI exceeds 200. Additionally, sports medicine personnel have full authority to stop outdoor activity at any AQI level if student-athletes experience respiratory problems.
