UC Davis wins UNLV Invite, Karsseboom named MVP

LAS VEGAS - Junior outside hitter Brianna Karsseboom posted 13 kills, hit .458 and subsequently captured tournament MVP honors in leading UC Davis to a 25-14, 25-18, 25-23 sweep of Binghamton at the UNLV Invitational women's volleyball tournament Saturday. The Aggies finished the weekend at 3-0, winning the tourney team championship.

Karsseboom posted 13 kills with just two errors. Junior middle blocker Lauren Jackson and sophomore outside hitter Lauren Matias also made the all-tournament team. Jackson posted five blocks in Saturday's win to finish with 19 for the weekend. Matias added eight kills and three block assists against the Bearcats, bringing her weekend totals to 31 kills and a .257 average.

The Aggies recorded 4.0 team stuffs to hold Binghampton to a minus-.103 average in the first set. Karsseboom had three kills while junior middle Kelechi Ohiri led the net charge with three block assists. UC Davis opened to a 5-1 start, then extended its lead to 12-5 after Ohiri and freshman Mahalia White teamed up for back-to-back blocks. That edge grew to 18-10 on an ace from junior Emily Allen, then 24-12 thanks to two Karsseboom kills.

Karsseboom continued to fire in the second set, hitting 7-for-11 with no errors in helping UC Davis hit .282 for the frame. A brief offensive stumble allowed Binghamton to take a 14-12 lead, but UC Davis responded with eight unanswered points, mostly behind Allen's serving. Karsseboom had three kills in a block in that 8-0 run.

The Bearcats battled closely with the Aggies in a hopes to prevent a sweep, even holding a 22-19 late lead after a Kaelan Haag service ace. However, UC Davis finished on a 6-1 run. Ohiri had two kills in the final stretch, while Matias (5), Allen (4) and White (4) helped the Aggies finish with 19 kills and a .375 success rate in the final frame.

UC Davis returns to action at the Pioneer Classic on September 1. The Aggies open with host Denver, then take on Eastern Illinois and Niagara in Saturday's session.
