49ers spoil two outstanding pitching performances

Box Score April 8, 2017

Gm. 1 Box Score | Gm. 2 Box Score

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Andrea Reynolds and Katie Kibby, UC Davis' starting pitchers for Saturday's Big West doubleheader at LBSU Softball Complex, each threw an outstanding game against the 49ers on their home diamond, and challenged last year's NCAA Tournament participant in every inning of both games. Each went the distance; Reynolds allowed only six hits scattered throughout her time in the circle, Kibby gave up five throughout her first 5.1 innings thrown. But a Long Beach run, scored in the bottom of the first inning of Gm. 1 on a two-out single to left, was the only one recorded by either team, and led to a series-opening 1-0 win for LBSU.

That lone scoring opportunity took place after Brianna Warner opened the weekend with a double to left field, which was followed two batters later by an Alexis Carney walk.

Later in the game, the Aggies loaded the bases with two outs, but were unable to push anyone across the plate. In a game where an inch or two can ultimately determine the fate of each team, that margin was the difference between an inning-ending pop out and what could have been the most dangerous scoring rally for either team throughout the entire day.

After scoring that run, Long Beach was unable to figure out Reynolds for the rest of the day since the senior right-handed kept 49er batters off-balance, and off the base paths in the five innings that followed.

In Saturday's other game, a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning helped LBSU snap a scoreless tie; that margin remained unchanged until a one-out single to center allowed Nichole Fry, who reached base on a walk, to record an insurance run for her team.

Those two pitches were the difference in another hard-fought and entertaining game, as Long Beach swept the day's action with a 2-0 result in Gm. 2.

UC Davis will look to secure a victory in Sunday's series finale in Long Beach, and will enter that 1 p.m. matchup with a 16-21 overall and 1-4 Big West record. The 49ers will return to the diamond tomorrow with records of 16-19-1 and 4-1.
