HONOLULU -- The UC Davis baseball team combined for 20 runs and 24 hits over two games on Saturday night, lifting the Aggies to a sweep of their Big West Conference doubleheader with Hawai'i by the scores of 11-4 and 9-3 at Les Murakami Stadium in Honolulu.
After the series was delayed by a day due to rain on Friday night, UC Davis improved to 12-19 overall on the season and 5-6 in Big West Conference play, winning its third series overall and and its second league series of the season, while the Rainbow Warriors fell to 21-14 overall and 3-5 in conference play with the two defeats.
With the doubleheader sweep, the Aggies posted only the team's second ever series win versus Hawai'i, and its first since taking 2-of-3 at home from the Rainbow Warriors in 2014. Saturday also clinched UC Davis' first Big West road series win since the Aggies took 2-of-3 at CSUN in 2014.
The two teams return to Les Murakami Stadium for the series finale on Sunday (April 23) at 1:05 p.m. HT (4:05 p.m. PT).
GAME 1: UC Davis 11, Hawai'i 4
Seniors Jacob Thomas and Cameron Olson finished with three hits apiece to help power a 15-hit Aggie attack in the opener, as UC Davis scored nine of its 11 runs over the final four innings en route to the 11-4 victory.
Three other Aggie hitters finished with two hits on the day as UC Davis finished in double digits in hits for the 12th time this season and finished with 10-or-more runs for the third time this year -- the first since putting up a dozen in a win at Creighton on March 26.
Senior right-hander Justin Mullins (1-2) picked up his first win of the year, allowing four runs on seven hits over 5.1 innings of work, while junior teammate Matt Blais came on to earn his second career save, allowing just two hits and striking out a pair over the final three innings.
Rainbow Warrior ace Brendan Hornung (5-3) took the loss, allowing five earned on 10 hits over five innings of work.
A walk to Alex Aguiar with two outs and the bases loaded in the first plated the first run of the game for either team, and the Aggies added a second run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Thomas that plated Ryan Hooper (who doubled) for a 2-0 advantage.
UC Davis threatened to break the game wide open with a four-run sixth, thanks to sacrifice flies by Hooper and Thomas, an RBI single by Brad Pluschkell, and an error after a passed ball that plated Pluschkell from third later in the inning, to make it a 6-0 ballgame.
Hawai'i answered the Aggies' four-spot with one of its own in the home half on a two-run home run by Eric Ramirez, a sac fly by Dustin Demeter, and a throwing error that brought the Rainbow Warriors back to within a pair.
However, that would be as close as they would get, as an error plated Mark Cardinalli with UC Davis' seventh run of the game in the seventh, Olson's team-best fifth home run of the season in the eighth -- a two-run shot -- gave the Aggies a 9-4 advantage, and the visitors capped the scoring with a Hooper RBI single and a run on a double play in the ninth for the final tallies.
Aguiar, Cardinalli, and Hooper, combined to score seven of the team's 11 runs -- three of those by Cardinalli.

GAME 2: UC Davis 9, Hawai'i 3
Senior catcher Elijah Ontiveros finished with two doubles and drove in three runs -- including a pair during a five-run sixth inning to break open a tight game -- helping back junior Orlando Razo's stellar effort on the mound and lift UC Davis to the 9-3 victory in the nightcap.
The reigning Big West pitcher of the week, Razo (5-2) was dominant once again, allowing just a single earned run on six hits while striking out nine over 7.2 innings en route to his third straight win. He retired eight consecutive hitters at one point from the fifth to eighth innings, stranding three for the game.
Dominic DeMiero (4-4) suffered the loss for the Rainbow Warriors despite retiring the first nine batters he faced, allowing six runs on six hits over 5.2 innings of work.
Hawai'i was the first on the board via an Eric Ramirez RBI single in the fourth that scored Kekai Rios for a 1-0 lead, but the Aggies answered back quickly, pulling the run back in the fifth when Alex Aguiar singled with one out and scored on Ontiveros' first double of the day to tie the game at 1-1.
After Razo set the Rainbow Warriors down in order in the home half, UC Davis broke the game open with a big sixth inning as senior Cameron Olson broke the tie after an error prolonged the inning with an RBI single and the Aggies loaded the bases for Caleb Van Blake, whose ground ball to the left side was enough to plate Ryan Anderson for a 3-1 lead.
Following a walk to Aguiar, Ontiveros came to the plate and stroked his second double down the left field line, scoring two and allowing a third to come home when the ball was misplayed in the outfield for a 6-1 advantage.
UC Davis tacked on three more in the seventh on back-to-back RBI doubles by Anderson and Ryan Hooper, and a Van Blake sacrifice fly later in the frame gave the Aggies a 9-1 lead and they cruised from there.
Hawai'i scored a pair of harmless unearned runs in the eighth on a two-run double by Chayce Ka'aua after an error that would have ended the inning, but sophomore Blake Hannah came on in relief and got a ground ball to retire the side, and then went 1-2-3 in the ninth, getting a pair of fly balls around a strikeout to end the game.
