RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Senior Brianna Warner finished 4-for-7 with three runs scored, while Christa Castello and Caroline Figueroa each drove in a pair of runs in the day's first game, but host UC Riverside rallied from an early deficit in the opener and then completed the sweep of a Big West Conference doubleheader by the scores of 9-8 and 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field in Riverside, Calif.
The Aggies fell to 17-26 overall and 2-9 in league play, collecting a total of 18 hits on the day -- including their seventh double-digit performance with 10 hits in the opener. The Highlanders improved to 23-19 overall and 5-6 in conference.
A big second inning in the opener got UC Davis out to a quick start, plating four runs to stake Katie Kibby to an early lead. A bunt single by Taylor Peters with runners at second and third got the Aggies on the board and drew a throw on a steal of second, enough to allow Ashley Lotoszynski to steal home and make it 2-0.
Two batters later, Castello laced a triple to the gap in right centerfield to score both Peters and Marissa Jauregui for a 4-0 advantage.
UCR pulled a run back in its half of the inning, but the Aggies continued to pile on with three more in the third as a two-run double by Figueroa and an RBI double by Lotoszynski gave the visitors a six-run advantage.
The Highlanders wouldn't let UC Davis run away with the contest just yet, scoring three in their half of the inning after three straight singles to start the frame loaded the bases. A walk and a wild pitch preceded the big blow off the bat of Danielle Ortega, who tripled to right centerfield to drive in two more and make it 7-5.
Riverside wasn't done, adding two more in the fourth on a single by Brittney Garcia and a bases loaded fielder's choice by Anessa Cepeda to tie the game at seven all.
Both teams left runners on in the fifth and sixth innings before the Aggies put together a rally in the seventh to plate the go-ahead run. Warner reached on a bunt single and was sacrificed to second before Taylor Misfeldt (10-4) got a strikeout for the second out of the frame. That's when Warner took matters into her own hands, taking off for third and swiping the bag before the throw from the catcher got away from the defense, allowing Warner to score for the 8-7 lead.
Down to their final three outs, the Highlanders had one more rally in them loading the bases on an error, a single, and a walk. Hannah Rodriguez was able to draw a five-pitch walk, scoring Sarah Parten with the tying run before the Aggies got an out on a ground ball to the left side, erasing a runner at the plate.
Frankie Mendoza (0-1), the third UC Davis pitcher of the game, suffered the loss in relief, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out a pair over three innings of work.
Rebecca Faulkner, however, needed only two pitches to end game one, lining a single to left to score Jenna Curtan with the walk-off winner.
In game two, Castello and Isaballa Leon each finished with two hits, but the Aggies weren't able to generate a run off their eight hits for the contest as the Highlanders scored three times in the fourth and twice more in the sixth en route to the 5-0 win.
UC Davis left seven runners on base -- three of those in scoring position -- for the game, putting together its best chance in the opening frame after loading the bases on a fielder's choice, an error, and an infield single by Warner, but coming up empty. The Aggies also got a runner to third in the fifth inning on a one-out triple by Castello, but a pair of ground balls got UCR out of the jam.
Misfeldt (11-4), who pitched four innings of relief to earn the win in game one, earned her second win of the day in the shutout, striking out four in the complete-game effort. Andrea Reynolds (6-13) was charged with the loss, allowing four earned on 13 hits in 5.2 innings of work.
Game three of the series is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon (April 23) in Riverside.
