Nailbiter highlights Saturday's doubleheader

DAVIS, Calif. - Alex Sotomayor hit 3-for-4 and drove in two runs, Christa Castello finished 2-for-4, Brianna Warner, Meghan Bradbury, Marissa Jauregui each recorded a hit, and Katie Kibby went the distance in the opening game of Saturday's Big West doubleheader at La Rue Field, one Cal State Fullerton won 3-2.

Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the fifth, Sotomayor's two-out single down the left field line allowed Bradbury and Jauregui to touch the dish and pull the Aggies even with Cal State Fullerton at 2-2.

Bradbury entered the game as a pinch hitter and delivered with a single to center, followed by Jauregui's single to right field.

However, an awkward looking play was part of a Titan effort in the sixth inning that ultimately led to the game-winning run.

A lead-off single up the middle kicked-off action in the sixth; after the Aggies recorded the first out of the frame on a Cal State Fullerton sacrifice bunt, a potential inning-ending double play only led to the second out of the inning.

After Zoe Richard reached first after being hit by a pitch, she ran to second on a grounder to short from teammate Kylie Padilla. Castello, UC Davis's shortstop, recorded out number two, but was forced to make an awkward throw to first when Richard slid into the bag. Aggie fans in attendance thought the final out should have been awarded on an interference call, but the play stood as originally called. And with two outs in the inning, a hard-hit shot deep into the hole at short allowed the Titans to snap a 2-2 tie.

Were it not for an outstanding effort by Castello on that tie-breaking play, CSF would have easily scored more that one run. From her original position at short, she sprinted to her right and dove into shallow left field to corral the ball. Even though she was unable to make a throw on the play, her hustle allowed the Aggies to remain within striking distance down only one run, instead of two or more.

In Saturday's second game, Alexis Carney drove in three of UC Davis' five runs. Her first took place in the fifth inning when she hit a deep fly ball center, which allowed Jauregui to score on the sacrifice fly. Two innings later, she hit her fifth home run of the season when she turned on a 2-1 pitch and launched a shot that cleared the fence in straightaway center.

A single through the left side of the infield is how the Aggies' scored their first run of Gm. 2; shortly after Carney's sac fly, Castello earned a free pass home when CSF pitcher Sydney Golden was called for an illegal pitch.

Entering the game with one out recorded in the top of the second, Mendoza threw a gem, and recorded career-high numbers in Saturday's series finale. The freshman right-hander threw 5.2 innings, and allowed only four hits after the Titans jumped out to a sizable lead after scoring three in the first and another six in the second.

UC Davis not only recorded the Titans in order in four consecutive innings with Mendoza in the circle, but also battled back and pulled within four before the game ultimately ended in Cal State Fullerton's favor by a 9-5 score.

UC Davis will return to the road for its next set of Big West games, starting with a doubleheader on April 22 at UC Riverside. The Aggies will head to the Inland Empire with a 17-24 overall and 2-7 Big West record; Cal State Fullerton will now return home with records of 23-18 and 6-3.
