DAVIS, Calif. - Heads-up baserunning by Christa Castello in the first inning of Friday's Big West home opener helped the Aggies score their first run of the series, a four-run fifth inning, highlighted by Maddie Rojas' three-run blast to right center, pulled UC Davis even with Cal State Fullerton at 5-5, but that tied score was snapped in the top of the seventh to allow the Titans to leave La Rue Field with a 6-5 win.

UC Davis will enter Saturday's 12 p.m. doubleheader with a 17-22 overall and 2-5 Big West record; Cal State Fullerton is now 21-18 and 4-3 with its result.

Castello opened the game with a single to center field, then advanced to second when the next batter, Alex Sotomayor, reached on a single to left of her own. Isabella Leon followed with a bunt single, but it was that play that allowed UC Davis to take an early 1-0 lead.

As Leon's bunt rolled down the first base line, Fullerton's catcher and first baseman traveled towards the bag as well, hoping the ball would roll foul. It never did, and when it was corralled, Castello wisely recognized that no Titan stood anywhere near home plate. It was then when Castello rounded third (never breaking stride) and touched home plate standing up.

Cal State Fullerton responded with four runs in the third and another in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead until the Aggies pulled even thanks to a thrilling scoring rally capped by Rojas' second home run of the season.

Originally reaching base on a fielder's choice, Alexis Carney scored UC Davis' second run when Ashley Lotoszynski singled to center, joining Warner on base after she was hit by a pitch in the previous at bat.

With two outs, Rojas swung at the first pitch faced by CSF starter Cerissa Rivera, which also ended up being her last of the game because the freshman first baseman hit an absolute blast to right center, which cleared the bases and tied the score at 5-5 in the process.
