No. 49 Gauchos hand Aggies first Big West defeat

April 10, 2017

DAVIS, Calif. -- The UC Davis doubles duo of freshman David Goulak and junior Tommy Lam upset the No. 19-ranked tandem in the country to help clinch the doubles point, but defending Big West Conference champion UC Santa Barbara was too tough in singles, as the No. 49-ranked Gauchos won five of the six singles contests in straight sets en route to a 5-2 win on Monday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.

The Aggies suffered their first Big West defeat of the year in falling to 11-7 overall and 2-1 in league play, while UCSB improved to 14-5 overall and in 2-0 in conference, winning its seventh consecutive contest.

Goulak and Lam finished off the doubles point victory for UC Davis with a 6-4 win over the Gauchos' Morgan Mays and Simon Freund at the top spot, who entered the day ranked No. 19 in the nation according to the latest ITA poll released on April 4, for a 1-0 lead in the match.

That came closely on the heels of a win by seniors Bryce McKelvie and James Wade, who defeated Nicolas Moreno de Alboran and Anders Holm, 6-4, at No. 2 doubles after Santa Barbara had posted an early win at No. 3.

The Aggies' advantage was short-lived, however, as the Gauchos took home victories in each of the first five singles matches of the day en route to the victory. UC Davis' only other point came at No. 6 singles where freshman Max Pham won for the sixth time in his last seven contests with a, 6-4, 6-4, victory over Chase Masciorini.

Two months after having their first match postponed due to rain, the Aggies will host Nevada in their regular season home finale on Wednesday (April 19) at 2 p.m. at the Marya Welch Tennis Center to close out and eight-match homestand. UC Davis finishes the regular season with Big West road matches at UC Riverside (April 21) and UC Irvine (April 22) before the conference tournament in Indian Wells, Calif., on April 27-30.
