STANFORD, Calif. - Alexis Carney's single to left field ruined Stanford's shutout bid in the fourth inning of Wednesday's non-conference game at Smith Family Stadium, and the host Cardinal escaped a bases-loaded situation in that same frame and ended action in the fifth inning by scoring two runs to top UC Davis by a 9-1 score.
The Aggies will have little break between this game, and their next ones since they are scheduled to host San Jose State at 1:15 p.m. and Seton Hall immediately thereafter, at La Rue Field, as part of the Aggie Invitational I's first day.
UC Davis will enter its first home tournament of the season with a 7-13 overall record while Stanford improves to 13-8.
After Marissa Jauregui led off the fourth inning with a five-pitch walk, Christa Castello pushed her to second with a single to right field. After Ashley Lotoszynski was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Carney came through in the clutch with her base hit to left. Unfortunately for UC Davis, a force out at home and an inning-ending double play prevented the Aggies from pushing additional runs across the plate.
Seton Hall and San José State will kick off action at this weekend's tournament with its 11 a.m. matchup, live stats, internet audio links for every game taking place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday are available at the event's Tournament Central webpage.
