HONOLULU - A double from Christa Castello in the top of the first inning of Friday's Big West opener at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium led to the first run recorded by either team when a Hawai'i throwing error, which took place three batters later, allowed the Aggies' shortstop to sprint home and score. Led by a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the third, the Rainbow Wahine responded by scoring the next nine runs to top UC Davis, 9-1 in six innings.
After their Div. I-record seven-game win streak was snapped, the Aggies will return to RWSS for Saturday's doubleheader, which starts at 5 p.m. PT/2 p.m. HT with a 15-18 overall and 0-1 Big West record. Hawai'i will enter the final matchups of a 27-game homestand with records of 22-10 and 1-0.
With runners on first and second in the top of the fifth inning, UC Davis was ready to chip away at Hawai'i's lead, but saw its scoring opportunity end on a sliding catch by its third baseman.
When the Aggies were able to place runners in scoring position, it was plays like that one that ended numerous rallies, and respectful applause from fans of both teams.
Friday's series opener ended up being a freakish, and hard-luck night for the Aggies; five of the Rainbow Wahine's runs were scored via the long ball and each were recorded with two outs.
In addition to Castello's double, Ashley Lotoszynski, Maddie Rojas, Alex Sotomayor and Taylor Peters were collectively responsible for the Aggies' hit total.
