Extra-inning victory highlights Aggies' busy day

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - A hard-hit grounder to short from Caroline Figueroa allowed Christa Castello to score from third and lift UC Davis to a 3-2 win over UMass in the second day of action at La Rue Field, as part of the Aggie Invitational I tournament.

Placed on second to start the events that took place in the 10th, Brianna Warner's grounder to first allowed Castello to stand just 60 feet away from snapping a 2-2 tied score.

After the Minutewomen struck first in the top of the second, UC Davis tied the score at 1-1 in its half of the third when a leadoff single up the middle from Alex Sotomayor turned into the Aggies' first run of the game.

Advancing to second on a fielder's choice, then taking third on a heads-up baserunning play when Castello hit a fly ball to deep center, Alexis Carney drove in Sotomayor on her two-out single to UMass' shortstop.

That score remained as is for the next four full innings until UMass regained the lead in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice bunt and a single back to the circle from Frankie Mendoza. As was the case with Carney's RBI, Mendoza drove in her teammate with two outs already recorded.

Undaunted, UC Davis pulled even once again on a ground out to the circle of its own, allowing Warner to sprint home from third. The Aggies' centerfielder advanced from second to third on a wild pitch before scoring two batters later.

In the Aggies' first game of the day, a double steal, that included Warner swiping home in the first, and Figueroa's RBI single up the middle led to the Aggies' two runs, but San José State's two-run fifth, and one-run sixth helped it collect a 4-2 win.

Halted on Thursday due to darkness, UC Davis and Seton Hall were able to resume their matchup, and squeeze it in before sunset.

Trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the eighth against the Pirates, Castello and Lotoszynski each drove in a run on a single to third and double to right center, respectively, but Seton Hall was able to hang on and record a 5-3 result.
