Early offense leads to Causeway victory

Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis took advantage of a second inning Sacramento State error to score the first run of Wednesday's non-conference home game at La Rue Field, extended its lead to 3-0 through three innings, Alex Sotomayor's triple to left center pushed Maddy Rojas home, and Sotomayor scored on the very next pitch on a passed ball to help UC Davis record a 5-2 victory.

With the result, the Aggies secured their first Causeway Cup sweep against the Hornets since the 2011 season, eighth win in the last 10 head-to-head games, and will enter Friday's 9 a.m. tournament opener at the San Diego Classic I, vs. McNeese State, with a 6-8 record. Sacramento State will continue its season with a 4-7 record.

Ashley Lotoszynski came inches away from recording the first run of the game when her line drive to left field bounced off the white tape that lined the top of the outfield fence. Instead of touching plate on a round tripper, she eventually scored, in the second inning, on a misplayed bloop single to center from Taiya McInnes.

In the following frame, it was another single that allowed Brianna Warner to scamper home from third and double the Aggies' lead. After reaching base on a triple to the corner in left field, Warner watched Christa Castello hit a shallow pop fly that bounced in the most dangerous piece of infield real estate.

Not only was Sacramento State's pitcher unable to get her glove on the ball, she could not turn around fast enough to even dive for the out. If she did, the chances were quite high that she would have lunged towards one of her teammate's legs since the second and third baseman each unsuccessfully sprinted towards Castello's blooper.

After Sotomayor's triple in the sixth drove in Rojas, UC Davis tacked on another insurance run off another Hornet miscue to extend its lead to a 5-1 margin.

A Hornet solo home run in the top of the seventh was the only blemish in what was another outstanding performance in the circle from Andrea Reynolds. By limiting Sacramento State to only six hits, the senior right-hander picked her second victory of the season.

In addition to it Friday morning matchup vs. McNeese State, the Aggies will also face RV/- Oregon State, Detroit Mercy, San Diego and RV/RV San Diego State before returning home for 13 local games in a row: a road contest at Stanford and back-to-back home tournaments.
