Box Score

DAVIS, Calif. - Taylor Peters collected a hit in each of her four at bats throughout Wednesday's home opener at La Rue Field, drove in and scored a run, Alexis Carney earned UC Davis' first RBI of the day and Katelyn Kibby allowed zero hits throughout her two full innings in the circle, but an interference call that took place in the sixth inning turned the Aggies' 3-2 lead into the game's final score, one that ended 6-3 in Stanford's favor.

UC Davis will head to this weekend's Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a 2-1 record; the visiting Cardinal will return home to open a tournament of its own with a 5-2 record.

Trailing 2-0 entering the bottom of the third, a groundout to second allowed Brianna Warner to score UC Davis' first run of the game and cut its deficit in half. Following a fielding error from Kristina Inouye, Peters, who initially reached on a bunt single, scored from second base to even the score.

"I think Taylor had an amazing game today, she did not force anything and found ways to reach base," said head coach Erin Thorpe.

Reaching base on another Stanford error, Alex Sotomayor gave UC Davis a 3-2 lead when she scored from third on another bunt single from Peters the following inning.

Stanford's batters were retired in order following each Aggie scoring rally; the events that took place in the top of the sixth matched what took place the previous two frames. UC Davis' pitchers were able to force groundouts, and stellar plays on defense were turned whenever the ball was hit sharply.

However, one unfortunate call immediately changed the fortunes for each team.

Shortly after the sixth inning started, Kristina Inouye was picked off first base after Bessie Noll hit a line drive straight to Sotomayor, resulting in what everyone at La Rue Field thought was a double play. Instead, interference was called and both Cardinal players advanced a base. Once the inning concluded, all nine Cardinal batters earned a trip to the plate, and helped their team score four runs to regain the lead for good.

UC Davis' weekend in Palm Springs will start on Friday when the Aggies open play at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at 10 a.m. versus No. 22/23 Kentucky, and against Liberty later that day at 1 p.m. The team will face RV/RV Illinois (9:30 a.m.) and No. 6/5 UCLA (3 p.m.) on Saturday before ending the tournament on Sunday against Utah Valley (10 a.m.).

"We want to play the best version of our game, regardless of who we face. This team has so much depth, ability and potential this season, now it is on us to find a way to use those things to help us succeed," Thorpe said.

"In the next two weeks, we have seven top-25 games, which is a phenomenal opportunity for this team. We know that playing teams of this caliber will help us prepare for our Big West schedule."
