Aggies' unbeaten streak ends at Riverside

Box Score Oct. 7, 2017

Box Score

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Host UC Riverside scored a pair of second-half goals to break up a scoreless match midway through the period, helping lift the Highlanders to their first victory of the season, 2-0, over visiting UC Davis on Saturday night at the UCR Soccer Stadium.

The loss ended the Aggies' four-match unbeaten streak, dropping them to 5-6-2 overall and 2-1-1 in Big West Conference play after suffering their first defeat since mid-September. Riverside improved to 1-10 overall and 1-3 in league play.

Sophomore Adam Mickelson finished with a match-high three shots, helping UC Davis double-up the Highlanders in the shot category, 14-6, for the match. Nine different Aggies finished with attempts for the night, but Highlander goalkeeper Vincent Morales stopped all four shots on frame to record the shutout.

Three of Morales' four saves came in the first half, turning away Kyle Higgins twice and Nabi Kibunguchy on another to keep UC Davis off the board and send both teams to the locker room scoreless at the break.

UC Riverside finally broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute after a foul in the box led to a penalty kick for the Highlanders' Antonio Lokossou, whose initial attempt was saved by the Aggies' Wallis Lapsley, but the sophomore was unable to corral the rebound as Lokossou followed his shot for his third goal of the year and a 1-0 lead.

Chasing a goal, UC Davis unleashed the next five shots following the goal -- one saved by Morales and another blocked by the defense -- but were unable to dent the back of the net. Riverside iced the victory with a goal in the final minute as Ricardo Ruiz converted a give-and-go with teammate Eduardo Sanchez, firing to the far post for the final, 2-0, advantage.

The Aggies now turn their attention to their North Division foes, opening divisional play against UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday (Oct. 11) at 4 p.m. at Aggie Soccer Field.
