DAVIS, Calif. - More than 100 alumni, including members of the three conference-champion teams, plus former coaches Tom Elson and Jerry Hinsdale, are expected to attend the UC Davis Men's Water Polo Alumni Weekend festivities, which take place on Friday and Saturday.
"We are very excited about this event," said Daniel Leyson, Child And Meisel Families Director of Men's Water Polo. "The number of RSVP's we have had from people across 50 years of Aggie men's water polo is astounding. We are looking forward to connecting our present-day program with the long history of water polo at UC Davis."
The event begins on Friday evening with a welcome social hosted by the Nicholson family, whose son, Teddy, was a team captain from 2010 to 2014. The weekend continues with a noon alumni game on Saturday, immediately followed by a barbecue hosted by the Vowell family, whose son, Matt, was a 2012 All-American.
The water polo event then merges into the 3 p.m. Brewfest and the 6 p.m. UC Davis football game against Eastern Washington. The promo code "POLOALUMNI" is available for all guests coming from the water polo alumni event to the Brewfest and/or football game.
Members of the 1996, 1997 and 2016 teams, each of which captured Western Water Polo Association titles, will be in attendance. Among the guests are Tom Elson, who coached the 1996 and 1997 teams while still working full-time as an engineer; and Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Famer Jerry Hinsdale, who guided UC Davis swimming and water polo from 1961 through 1994. Hinsdale also mentored water polo teams to numerous Far Western Conference titles and NCAA postseason appearances throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
