Box Score Oct. 14, 2017

Box Score

SACRAMENTO -- Redshirt freshman Nabi Kibunguchy became the 15th different UC Davis player to score a goal this season, netting the eventual game-winner at the 60-minute mark for his first career goal, and senior Noah Wilson tacked on another score later in the second half, lifting the visiting Aggies to a, 2-0, Big West Conference victory over Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon at Hornet Field.

UC Davis, which earned back-to-back wins for the second time this season and has now outscored conference opponents 10-4, improved to 7-6-2 overall and 4-1-1 in league matches, temporarily moving into sole possession of first place in the North Division with 13 points pending UC Santa Barbara's (3-1-1) result against Cal Poly (1-4-0) later Saturday night.

The Hornets slipped to 7-6-1 overall and 3-2-1 in Big West play with the loss.

After the two teams played to a shutout for the first 45 minutes, Kibunguchy, a managerial economics major from Elk Grove, Calif., parlayed a pass from teammate Adam Mickelson into his first score, finishing the cross at the front right corner of the box for a, 1-0, lead.

Joining the stable of Aggie scorers this season, Kibunguchy became the eighth different UC Davis player to score their first career goals this season, while Mickelson collected his team-high fourth assist of the year and his fifth point in six Big West contests.

Wilson, a religious studies major from Petaluma, Calif., then put the match just out of reach with just over 10 minutes to play in regulation, collecting his third goal of the year to move into a tie for the team lead in that category. Teammate Lizandro Torres had his pass deflected right to Wilson, who put home the score into an empty net for the final, 2-0, advantage.

Torres, who scored the game-winner in a 3-0 shutout of UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday, posted his first assist of the year, tying Wilson for third on the team with seven points on the year.

Sophomore goalkeeper Wallis Lapsley finished with two saves -- both off the foot of Sacramento State's leading scorer, Christian Webb -- to post his second consecutive clean sheet and his third overall this season.

Kibunguchy led all players with four shots on the afternoon, helping his team to a 14-6 advantage in that category for the match.

The Aggies return home to complete the first round of play against the North Division on Wednesday (Oct. 18) at 4 p.m., welcoming Cal Poly to the Aggie Soccer Field. UC Davis then hits the road, closing out the week at UC Santa Barbara to start the second leg of division play on Saturday (Oct. 21) at 7 p.m.
