DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis senior Eli Whittle, junior Everett Maltby, and freshman Max Pham, each posted a pair of straight-set victories and are through to Saturday's quarterfinal round, while all four Aggie doubles teams took home first-round wins to highlight day one of the 2016 Aggie Invitational at the Marya Welch Tennis Center on Friday.

Opening the morning with doubles, UC Davis powered through a trio of 8-3 victories -- including a win by third-seeded Maltby and senior Jesse Ross -- while the second-seeded tandem of Pham and Whittle edged Pacific's Kumara Adavelly and Nathan Hampton, 8-7 (4), to move on.

Freshman David Goulak and junior Tommy Lam will meet top seeded Mikus Losbergs and Kasparas Zemaitelis of Sacramento State in the Flight "A" quarterfinals on Saturday at 8:30 a.m., while seniors Bryce McKelvie and James Wade will look to upset the flight's No. 2 seed in Mathieu Garcia and Alexander Wallace of Portland.

In Flight "B" Maltby and Ross will take on Jesus Barajas and Kamran Khan of Santa Clara, while Pham and Whittle will battle Portland's Carlos Donat and Andrew Newell.

As the scene shifted to singles, three of the five Aggies in Flight "A" took home straight set wins in their opening match, but Maltby was the only one to emerge unscathed in the round of 16, defeating eighth-seeded William Genesen of Stanford, 6-3, 6-4.

Maltby is scheduled to face-off against third-seeded Mathieu Garcia of Portland -- the lone seeded player remaining in the top half of the bracket -- at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

In consolation play, Ross and McKelvie each advanced to the quarterfinals following their first-round main draw losses. Ross out-lasted Santa Clara's Robert Seby, 7-6 (6), 7-5, while McKelvie went three sets to defeat Gonzaga's Ruadhan O'Sullivan, 6-1, 1-6, 1-0 (10-5).

Ross takes on Portland's Pierre Garcia in the quarterfinals at 10 a.m. on Saturday, followed closely by McKelvie's quarterfinal bout against Nevada's Mile Cilic.

All three seeded Aggies in the Flight "B" singles draw took home first round wins, with Whittle and Pham punching their tickets to Saturday's next round thanks to victories in the round of 16.

The seventh-seeded Whittle opened with a 6-1, 6-3, win over Saint Mary's Matthew Campana, 6-1, 6-3, and then eased past Santa Clara's Kamran Khan, 6-1, 6-2. Pham, meanwhile, posted a 6-3, 6-3, win over the Gaels' Brian Lee, before closing out his day with a 6-3, 6-3, win over Nevada's Peter O'Donovan.

Whittle is scheduled to take on Portland's Carlos Donat -- the flight's No. 3 seed -- at 10 a.m. on Saturday, while Pham will face Ryan Shen of California. Shen upset the flight's No. 2 seed in Santa Clara's Connor Garnett in three sets in the round of 16.

Fourth-seeded David Goulak won his UC Davis debut, defeating Sacramento State's Louis Chabut, 6-4, 6-3, before suffering a 6-3, 6-2, loss to Nash Vollenweider of Saint Mary's.
