EUGENE, Ore. - Sophomore outside hitter Emily Allen posted a team-high 10 kills while Brianna Karsseboom added seven kills and redshirt freshman libero Heather Reed turned in 11 digs, but UC Davis could not maintain its strong start against Oregon, eventually falling in straight sets, 25-22, 25-16, 25-10, in the finale of the Oregon Classic women's volleyball tournament Saturday night.
UC Davis went 1-2 in the tournament, moving to 3-3 for the season.
Allen had half of her 10 total kills and Karsseboom landed four of her kills in the first set, in which the Aggies held a 22-19 lead before surrendering six straight points to give up the set. Sophomore middle blocker Kelechi Ohiri finished with five kills and a .364 average, mostly in the second and third sets. Sophomore Lauren Jackson matched Ohiri's five kills to go with a pair of blocks, including 3-for-5 attacking in the opener.
Oregon hit .298 for the match, including a .417 success rate in the second. Freshman Brooke Van Sickle led the Ducks with nine kills and a .412 clip. Sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Vander Weide provided another seven kills, three aces and 12 digs. Senior libero Amanda Benson led all players with 18 digs on floor defense.
UC Davis offered its best challenge in the opening set. Karsseboom put down a kill then teamed with Jackson on a block to set the board at 11-8. Allen scored two more kills and setter Maddie Merlino served up one of her two aces in a 4-0 run that gave the Aggies their biggest lead at 20-16. Allen's fifth kill of the set put UC Davis up, 22-19, but that proved to be the last of the Aggie scoring. Kacey Nady scored two kills and a block assist in the Ducks' 6-0 finish.
Save for a 1-0 Aggie start in the second, Oregon never trailed for the remainder of the match. Vander Weide hit five kills on 10 swings in the second, plus she served up an ace as part of her team's 5-1 start. UC Davis came back to tie the frame three times, first on a Jackson/Allen block at 10-10. Ohiri later scored a kill that equalized at 12-12. However, Oregon answered with three straight points and seven of the next nine in securing a 19-14 advantage. The Aggies did not come closer than five points for the remainder.
Oregon dominated the finale, holding UC Davis to just seven kills and seven attacking errors. Van Sickle and Willow Johnson paced the Ducks' offense with three kills while Benson led the way with eight digs on defense. Karsseboom and Ohiri combiend for 4-for-10 hitting for the Aggies.
UC Davis returns to action for its third tournament of the year, facing Southern Utah, Gonzaga and host Nevada at the Wolf Pack Tournament on Friday and Saturday.Â
