DAVIS, Calif. - Last week, Isabella von Ebbe and Lani-Rae Green competed in their first matches of the fall season when the par competed in singles, and doubles play, at the Battle in the Bay Classic. This weekend, the entire team will head down I-80 to compete in the women's tennis' first fall team tournament, the Cal Nike Fall Invitational.
Tournament officials are expected to reveal this year's draws late Thursday afternoon. UC Davis, Arizona State, BYU, Cal, Cal Poly, Fresno State, Nevada, Pacific, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, Santa Clara, UC Santa Barbara and UCLA are the 14 teams that comprise this year's field.
This weekend's Invitational consists of three flights of singles and doubles matches, each with main and consolation draws. Round-robin singles contests will take place on Saturday and Sunday.
At the Hellman Tennis Complex, Cal's main facility, streams of matches taking place on courts 1-6 will take place throughout the weekend. Click this link to view action taking place on any of those courts throughout the weekend.
At last year's event, two Aggie doubles teams won a consolation championship when Alex Huie - Kristy Jorgensen and Jessie Lee - Green each won their respective flights. Aggie doubles dominated the consolation draws since Lee and Green faced von Ebbe and Samantha Martino in the championship match.
A successful weekend at Cal was capped by Lee's main draw singles championship, which took place the following day when she defeated No. 3 seed Blaga Delic in straight sets.
This season's Invitational will also present Kristina Breisacher and Nikita Pradeep, UC Davis' incoming freshmen, with their first taste of Division I tennis.
Women's tennis will compete in their second tournament, in as many weeks, when the Aggies visit Moraga as a participant in the Saint Mary's Invitational. The team's fall schedule will conclude two weeks later, at Stanford, in the ITA Northwest Regional Championships.
