Sept. 19, 2016 LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Senior Christa Castello, recent graduates Leah Munden and Kaila Olson were recognized for their academic excellence when the National Fastpitch Coaches Association added each Aggie to its All-America Scholar-Athlete list for the 2015-16 school year.
The trio earned this distinction by earning a 3.5 GPA or higher for the entire academic year. This is the second time that Castello received academic accolades from the NFCA; Munden and Olson received this honor for the first time in their respective college careers.
Castello, who will return for her final season at UC Davis, will graduate in the spring with a degree in human development; Munden and Olson received their degree in human development and clinical nutrition, respectively, this past June.
Last year as a senior, Munden led all Aggie pitchers in innings pitched, and finished second on the team with her earned run average and opposing batting average. Her 2.17 walks per seven innings average is the second-lowest figure posted by a UC Davis pitcher in the program's D-I era.
Even though Olson earned a majority of her starts in right field in 2016, her skill set and versatility enabled her to also play second base, left field and compete as the team's designated player. In addition to setting a new single-season career high in hits and RBI, she also posted the best base on balls and stolen base totals of her career in her last year as an Aggie.
UC Davis will open its fall season on Saturday, Oct. 15, when former Aggies return to La Rue Field to face the 2017 squad in the program's annual Alumnae Game. The first game of the fall season will take place the following day when the Academy of Art visits campus for a 12 p.m. contest.
