DAVIS, Calif. - Pacific may have struck first when Loren Landrus scored the afternoon's first goal in the 47th minute, but it was UC Davis that owned the remaining 43 minutes in Friday's non-conference match at Aggie Soccer Field, a block of time that included goals from Crystal Crump, who scored the equalizer in the 58th minute, and Nicole Carson's first goal as an Aggie, a game-winner recorded in the 80th minute that lifted UC Davis to a 2-1 victory.
UC Davis recorded more than twice as many total shots (20-8) shots on goal (7-3), earned three times as many corners (12-4), and would have won by a bigger margin had a Tiger defender not blocked Carson's first shot of the day and kicked it towards the sideline.
The freshman forward beat Pacific goalkeeper Lena Perry, but it was her teammate that stood in the right place, at the right time, to record a team save and prevent the Aggies from scoring the game's first goal.
The victory improves UC Davis' overall record to 4-4-1 and extends its unbeaten streak against the Tigers to six matches. Prior to Friday's action, these teams ended their previous two head-to-head contests in a double-overtime draw. Before those results were recorded, the Aggies won three straight.
Pacific, a team that has not defeated its former Big West rival since the 2010 season (it joined the West Coast Conference before the start of the 2013-14 season), now sports a 0-6-1 overall record.
"I told my team after the match that I was pumped that a young team was able to come-from-behind and win this match," said head coach Twila Kaufman. "For having our backs against the wall, I am extremely pleased with the way this team played."
Celina Minissian led all players with eight shots -- singlehandedly matching Pacific's team total -- and finished one shot shy of matching a Division I-era record for the most shots taken in a game, which also took place at Aggie Soccer Field. On Sept. 9, 2012, Kiele Argente recorded nine shots vs. Northern Arizona. Since that day, no UC Davis player recorded more than six shots in a game.
Minissian was not the only Aggie who tested Pacific goalkeeper throughout the entire afternoon as eight players help the team record a collective 20 shots, one shy of matching a season-high total set at Sacramento State.
It was a textbook long ball from Andi Damian that set-up Crump's equalizer; after beating the final Tiger defender, a footrace between she and Perry took place. When the two met 25 yards from goal, its was the sophomore forward who reached the ball first, and had a split-second decision to make: poke the ball over Pacific's goalkeeper, who lost the 1v1 matchup to Crump, or corral the ball make a move to either side of Perry and take advantage of a wide-open net and plenty of empty real estate in front of the net. Crump chose to chip the ball over Perry, and celebrated with her teammates shortly thereafter.
Just over 12 minutes later, it was Crump who set up the Aggies' other goal after finding a wide-open teammate on the far side of the 18-yard box.
Once Carson received her teammate's pass, she blew past her defender, turned her body and blasted a shot with her right foot past Perry, which traveled across the field and came to a stop inside the post on the opposite side of the net.
UC Davis will now prep for its upcoming match at San Francisco, the first of three straight road matches taking place for the Aggies throughout the next two weeks. Kickoff at Negoesco Field is scheduled for 4 p.m., live stats and video stream links are available at UCDavisAggies.com.
