Aggies fall to Rebels in season opener

Aug. 26, 2016

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Freshman Lauren Matias posted a double-double of 13 kills and 10 digs while junior middle blocker Aima Eichie added a team-high .308 average and redshirt freshman libero Heather Reed totaled a match-high 20 digs, but UC Davis could not maintain momentum from its second-set win, falling in four to Ole Miss at the Betty Engelstad Center Friday. The set scores were 25-20, 23-25, 25-17, 25-19 in favor of the Rebels.

The Aggies open their 2016 season at 0-1 in the UND Classic.

Matias and Reed each made their collegiate debut in Friday's tournament opener. Sophomore outside hitter Emily Allen posted 10 kills on 39 swings while providing 15 digs and three blocks on defense. Senior Sophia Mar and sophomore Maddie Merlino shared setting duties with 19 assists apiece.

UC Davis trailed for most of the first set, falling behind by as much as a 17-11 margin after Ole Miss junior middle Taylor Alexander posted four blocks in a 7-1 run. The Aggies closed to within two points on Matias' winner at 18-16, then again on kills by sophomores Merlino and Kelechi Ohiri, but the Rebels managed to keep a step ahead. Junior outside hitter Kate Gibson put down a pair of kills in a 3-0 finish to give Ole Miss the match lead.

The second set saw a similar pattern: UC Davis giving chase, only to have the Rebels stay in front. Matias scored back-to-back kills to provide the Aggies with their first lead at 18-17, only to have Ole Miss reclaim the edge at 21-20. Walbrecht equalized for a side out, then Allen served up an ace to regain a 22-21 lead. Matias knocked two more kills while sophomore Brianna Karsseboom added another as UC Davis scored five of the last seven en route to the set victory. The two teams went to the break with a 1-1 match tie.

Allen and Matias each tallied six kills in the win, helping the Aggies improve from their .000 success rate in the first set to a .350 average in the second.

However, Ole Miss dominated the third set with .343 hitting and 11-for-15 in side-out conversions to UC Davis' .056 and 10-for-24 in the same respective categories. Gibson scored a kill and an ace in a 4-0 Rebel run to take a 14-7 lead, then an Aggie attack error extended the margin to 17-9. Eichie delivered a kill and a block assist during a brief 3-0 run that brought the deficit back to five, but UC Davis never approached any closer. Ole Miss freshman Nicole Purcell served up four straight points in a 5-0 finish to the set.

Senior Kendall Walbrecht boosted the Aggies to a 5-3 start in the fourth, but the Rebels responded with nine unanswered to craft a 12-5 advantage. Thompson posted two kills and teamed with Nayo Warnell on a block in that run. UC Davis was unable to put together more than two straight points the rest of the way, as Ole Miss steadily pulled away to leads of 20-11 and 24-17. The Aggies fought off two match points, including an ace by Matias. But Warnell combined with Aubrey Edle on a block for the 25th point.

Sophomore Lauren Jackson was a bright spot for UC Davis in the fourth set, providing 2-for-4 attacking with a pair of block assists. Still, the Aggies recorded more errors (11) than kills (9) in the finale.

Matias becomes the first Aggie to record a double-double in her collegiate debut since Chantal Paschetta posted identical stats of 13 kills and 10 digs against San Jose State on Aug. 26, 2005.

UC Davis concludes action at the UND Classic with matches against Omaha and the host Fighting Hawks. Match times are 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific, respectively.
