Aggies edged by Eagles in double overtime

Box Score Aug. 26, 2016

Box Score

LAS VEGAS - Celina Minissian scored her second goal of the season and Hailey Rittershofer recorded her first career goal in Friday's tournament opener at the UNLV Invitational, but Eastern Washington broke a 2-2 deadlock in the opening minutes of double overtime to defeat UC Davis, 3-2.

The Aggies will end its weekend at the Invitational Sunday morning against Northern Arizona, and will enter that contest with a 1-2 record.

With Friday's result, the Eagles remain undefeated at 3-0.

Starting with Minissian's strike in the 3:38 into the second half, each team scored twice throughout the final 45 minutes of action to force a sudden-death situation.

As was the case with UC Davis' first goal, Nicole Carson also earned an assist on her team's second when Rittershofer scored for the first time as an Aggie. The redshirt freshman found the back of the net on the last of her team-high three shots taken against the Eagles.

A team-high two of Minissian's three shots were on goal; combined, the Aggies' goal scorers were responsible for half of the team's shots and shots on goal.

Even though EWU recorded more shots through regulation, it was the Aggies who dominated play in both overtime periods. Of the four combined shots taken in sudden death, UC Davis was responsible for three. Unfortunately, it was EWU's lone shot that ended the game in the 104th minute, handing the Aggies a heartbreaking result in the process.

It was an Eagle goal scored in the 81st minute that forced UC Davis to play its first overtime match of the season.

Women's soccer will look to bounce back when it returns to Johann Memorial Field Sunday morning to face Northern Arizona. Kickoff for the Aggies' tournament finale is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.; live stats are available at UCDavisAggies.com.
