DAVIS, Calif. -- The UC Davis men's soccer team held a 16-10 advantage in shots, including a pair of attempts that rang the woodwork on the day, but the Aggies could not find the back of the net, battling visiting San Jose State in a scoreless draw on Friday evening at the Aggie Soccer Field.

The match was the 2016 season opener for both teams, which moved to 0-0-1 on the year.

Sophomore Matt Baringer had the first solid chance for the Aggies, clanging off the left post on a curling shot that looked destined for the upper corner just three minutes into the contest. Junior Noah Wilson, who came off the bench to lead the team with three shots on the day, also just missed with six minutes to go in regulation, hitting the crossbar to keep the match scoreless.

Two more second-half attempts from close range were also just missed by UC Davis as a corner by Wilson in the 53rd minute was headed back by freshman Nabi Kibunguchy to junior Chase Rhode, whose header went just wide from five yards out.

Nine minutes later, junior Evan Barrett had another attempt off a ball by teammate Connor Willis-Hong, who drove tight to the end line and laced a ball to the back post where Barrett's header just missed.

After being outshot, 8-2, in the opening half, the Spartans found some life after halftime. Alex Alcarez found some space in the 70th minute and curled a shot that just missed at the right post, and Jonathan Partida had a ball turned away by senior goalkeeper Armando Quezada before the close of regulation.

San Jose State held a 5-3 shot advantage in the two overtime periods, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.

In all, 10 different Aggies combined for the team's 16 shots, with Barrett, Rhode, Baringer, and Justin Wright, joining Wilson with multiple shots on the day. Jonathan Colunga led the Spartans with three of the team's 10 attempts on the night.

UC Davis opens a five-match road trip with a pair of local matches over Labor Day weekend, heading south to take on Pacific on Thursday (Sept. 1) in Stockton, Calif., before making the jaunt to the Bay Area to take on San Francisco on Sunday (Sept. 4). Both matches are scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.
