Aggie Idol wraps ninth edition at Toomey

May 19, 2016

DAVIS, Calif. - Senior swimmer Sara Ramos captured the first-place trophy at the ninth installment of Aggie Idol, the annual UC Davis student-athlete charity talent show Wednesday night. The 10-act revue raised funds for Team Davis, a local nonprofit organization that serves local children and adults with developmental, cognitive and/or physical disabilities.

Ramos, a third-time competitor performed a mash-up medley of Adele songs for her winning performance. Field hockey player Courtney Hessler, a previous Aggie Idol champion, joined up with soccer players Noah Wilson (keyboard) and Rachel Smith (percussion) for a cover of Alicia Keys' hit "If I Ain't Got You" for one of the runner-up acts. Soccer claimed the another runner-up nod as Justin Leavitt, Wallis Lapsley and Justin Wright teamed up for a dance number to the Backstreet Boys' "I Want It That Way."

Of course, the evening's true winner was Team Davis, now in its sixth year as the beneficiary for the annual showcase. Members of Team Davis also provided a rousing rendition of John Fogerty's baseball-themed hit "Centerfield."

Aggie Idol also provides an opportunity to recognize the current Student-Athlete Advisory Committee officers and usher in the new leadership. Alec Adamson (tennis), Agustina Singh (field hockey), Frederique Sleiffer (tennis) and Danielle Steffen (track & field) made up the 2015-16 SAAC officers. Sleiffer will graduate this spring, with incoming officers Aislinn Dresel (swimming) and Lani-Rae Green (tennis) taking her place. All five SAAC officers took turns as emcees during the show.

Interim athletics director Teresa Gould, first-year women's lacrosse coach Tee Ladouceur, and academic advisor Marcus Johnson served as judges, each providing a critique at the conclusion of an act. Gould also became the first repeat judge in the history of the showcase.

Aggie Idol, modeled loosely after the popular television show American Idol, took place in Upper Hickey Gym under the leadership of the 2006-07 SAAC Officers. The show moved to Freeborn Hall for five years, then relocated to Toomey Field in 2014 after Freeborn's closure. In previous Idols, SAAC sold tickets and proceeds went to the designated charities: Heifer International in 2007, Special Olympics Northern California in 2008, Invisible Children in 2009, and Team Davis since 2011. The current iteration of Aggie Idol has no admission; however, SAAC collects donations at the door.
