Aggies fall in Big West Championship quarterfinal

April 28, 2016

DAVIS, Calif. - For the third time in as many seasons, UC Davis drew UC Santa Barbara as its quarterfinal opponent at the Big West Women's Tennis Championships, the league's annual postseason tournament held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California. Unfortunately for the Aggies, the event's No. 7 seed, the No. 2- seeded Gauchos, who also entered Thursday's matchup with a No. 74 national ranking, advanced to Friday's semifinal round by virtue of their 4-0 victory.

Victorious in six of its last 10 duals, UC Davis ends the 2015-16 season with a 10-12 overall record while UCSB improves to 16-7 with today's result.

After winning the first two doubles matchups that finished to earn the doubles point, the first three singles matches also fell the Gauchos' way. By doing so, the remaining three singles contests ended immediately once UCSB earned a berth in Friday's semifinals.

Thursday's matchup also marked the final appearance for three Aggie student-athletes who will graduate within the upcoming weeks: senior Tiffany Pham, juniors Frederique Sleiffer and Alex Huie.

Coming off her thrilling three-set victory in her final home match last Sunday, Pham ends her storied career with a 9-3 dual record in singles matches this season, a 4-1 singles mark in conference play and victories in seven of her last 10 played.

Sleiffer, who battled injuries throughout the entire season, triumphantly returned to the Aggies' lineup in recent weeks, collected four doubles and three singles victories before competing in her final match as an Aggie earlier this morning.

Competing at UC Davis for the first time this season, Huie earned eight doubles dual wins - five earned at the No. 2 position - and collected another four in singles competition during the early weeks of the 2015-16 campaign.

For the second straight season, Jessie Lee won 15 singles duals; last year, that total was the second-highest behind Sleiffer's 16. This year, the sophomore is responsible for posting a team-high figure.

In addition to Lee, sophomore Kristy Jorgensen also posted a double-digit wins total by finishing with 10.

Sophomore Lani-Rae Green and Pham just missed posting double-digit totals of their own as each finished with nine singles victories.

Isabella von Ebbe's first season at UC Davis was a successful one, she won all eight singles duals played the No. 5 or No. 6 positions.

Also capturing eight singles wins during spring competition was junior Kamila Kecki.

Victorious in five of eight singles matches played in '16, Samantha Martino is another reason why women's tennis fans have a reason to feel optimistic about next season; she is one of seven players who are expected to return next season for head coach Bill Maze.

In doubles play, Pham and Huie led all Aggie tandems this year with seven dual wins.
