INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- The No. 70 UC Davis men's tennis team made quick work of Hawai'i in its Big West Conference Tournament opener as the third-seeded Aggies shutout the sixth-seeded Rainbow Warriors, 4-0, on Wednesday morning at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

With the victory, UC Davis set a new Division I standard with its 17th victory overall on the season, improving to 17-6 overall and setting up a date with No. 2 seed Cal Poly on Thursday afternoon (April 28) at 3 p.m. in the tournament semifinals.

Hawai'i ended its season at 1-17 with the loss.

Wins at the top two doubles positions staked the Aggies to an early 1-0 lead as the tandems of Alec Adamson and Adam Levie, as well as Brett Bacharach and Eli Whittle, combined win 12 of 15 games.

UC Davis then went on to post a trio of straight set victories in singles play to wrap up the day, with senior Brett Bacharach posting a, 7-5, 6-1, win over Marcel Chan at No. 3 to clinch the match. Junior James Wade took down Igor Kolaric, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2, while sophomore Everett Maltby didn't drop a game in shutting out Nikolai Storch, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5.

Wednesday's victory was only the third for the Aggies in nine trips to the Big West Tournament, winning a first-round game for the third time in the last five seasons. The 17 wins are the most for UC Davis since the 1991 squad finished 18-5 overall, while the shutout was the eighth of the year for the Aggies, extending their Division I single-season record.

On Thursday, UC Davis and Cal Poly will meet for the second time this season as the Aggies look to avenge a 4-3 defeat to the Mustangs back on April 16 in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Cal Poly took four out of the six singles contests en route to the win, with the match decided in a three-set, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, battle won by Josh Ortlip over Bryce McKelvie at the No. 4 position.

UC Davis is 0-2 against the Mustangs at the Big West Tournament, falling in the first round in 2008 (4-0) and the semifinals in 2012 (4-0).
