DAVIS, Calif. - Before Sunday's Big West Conference regular season finale at the Marya Welch Tennis Center began, UC Davis honored its three graduating student-athletes - senior Tiffany Pham, juniors Alex Huie and Frederique Sleiffer - in a pregame Senior Day ceremony that brought tears to many eyes for those in attendance.
Once action commenced, Hawai'i won two of three doubles matches and took a 1-0 lead into the singles round, where it won four of six head-to-head contests to defeat the Aggies, 5-2.
Competing in the final Big West Conference regular season dual, UC Davis ends the league's slate with a 10-11 overall and 2-6 conference record. As is the case with the Aggies, Hawai'i will now head to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California, to compete in the upcoming 2016 Big West Women's Tennis Championship, which kicks-off on Wednesday, April 27.
UC Davis will enter that event as its No. 7 seed and face No. 2 UC Santa Barbara Thursday morning at 8 a.m. By virtue of its 11-9 overall and 5-3 league record, No. 4 UH will face No. 5 UC Irvine that same day.
After dropping the first set of her singles match to Klara Pribylova, 6-4, Pham rebounded by winning the second set by a 6-3 score. With a slew of family members and friends in attendance cheering for her, Pham pulled away and easily won the third set, 7-5, in the final contest of the afternoon.
With the win, her third straight and eighth in the last 10 that finished, Pham will have an opportunity to join Lee and Kristy Jorgensen as Aggies with 10 or more singles victories to their credit this season.
Pham will enter the Indian Wells Tennis Garden with a 9-2 singles dual record.
As was the case with her teammate, Lee needed three sets to earn her team-high 15th singles victory, which also doubled as her ninth in a row.
After falling early to Sarah Gealer, who won the first set 6-4, Lee battled back to win the following two sets by scores of 6-3 and 10-3 to collect her ninth singles victory in the last 10 matches.
Earlier in the day, a 6-3 doubles victory, earned by Lani-Rae Green and Jorgensen against Cindy Nguyen and Roxanne Resma, took place between two Rainbow Wahine doubles wins. Even though Green/Jorgensen's triumph tied the doubles round a one win apiece, UH took the last remaining match to collect the doubles point.
The Big West Championship will begin Wednesday morning when No. 8 Cal Poly squares off against No. 9 UC Riverside. The winner of that contest will advance to the quarterfinals and draw top-seeded Long Beach State Thursday morning
In the last quarterfinal, No. 3 Cal State Fullerton will face No. 6 CSUN.
