Gauchos down Aggies in battle of unbeatens

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- Host UC Santa Barbara took the doubles point and outlasted the Aggies for five wins in singles play -- three of those in three sets -- as the No. 50 Gauchos defeated No. 69 UC Davis, 6-1, in a battle of Big West Conference unbeatens on Friday afternoon at the RecCen Courts in Santa Barbara, Calif.

The Aggies suffered their second straight defeat, falling to 15-5 overall and 2-1 in league play, suffering back-to-back losses for only the second time this season and the first since the start of the spring season back in January. UCSB improved to 14-6 overall and remained unscathed in conference at 4-0.

After pulling off the upset of the nation's 30th-ranked player on Wednesday at No. 16 California, junior Alec Adamson won his second straight match at the No. 1 spot -- and his fourth overall -- by handing Nathan Eshmade a, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, defeat to clinch the Aggies' lone point on the day.

A favorable bounce here and there and Friday could have been a different contest as Adamson's match was one of four singles contests to go the distance, with UC Davis rebounding from first set losses in each to post wins in the second set and extend each contest.

Victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles put the Gauchos out front early and the host side seized control with straight set victories at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to make it 3-0. Adamson's victory broke-up the run, but Nicolas Moreno posted a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, win over James Wade at No. 2 to clinch the match.

Senior Brett Bacharach and junior Bryce McKelvie each fought off their opponents to force a third set at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, posting 7-6 wins the second set of each of their contests before falling.

The Aggies look to rebound in their final road contest of the 2015-16 season on Saturday (April 16) at 2 p.m., taking on No. 65 Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
