Aggies win intense dual vs. Nevada, 5-2

April 15, 2016

Results

DAVIS, Calif. - Nevada may have won the doubles point, an ominous start for UC Davis in Friday's non-conference dual at the Marya Welch Tennis Center since the team that entered singles action with a 1-0 lead won the overall match in women's tennis' last 16 contests, but the Aggies broke a 2-2 team tie by winning the last three singles matches to defeat the Wolf Pack, 5-2.

This result is the fourth straight victory for the Aggies, and their sixth in the last seven matches. The team will now enjoy a lengthy break since UC Davis will not return to action until April 23 when CSUN visits campus for the team's penultimate regular season (and league) match.

The Aggies will return to Big West action for the first time in nearly a month - its last league contest took place on March 24 against UC Irvine in the second of its season-ending eight-match homestand - with a 10-9 overall record while Nevada will continue its Northern California road trip at 8-8.

Even though the Wolf Pack won the first doubles match to finish, Kamila Kecki and Frederique Sleiffer shutout Sara Korzeniecki and Monika Magusiak in their tiebreak to place the Aggies in a winner-take-all situation with one match still in action, at that time.

Nevada won that final contest to take a 1-0 lead into the singles round, but quickly saw UC Davis take a 2-1 advantage when Samantha Martino topped Magusiak, 6-3, 6-1, to record the Aggies' inaugural team point.

Kecki, the next Aggie to finish her singles match, also recorded a positive straight-set result, and became the only UC Davis player to win both matches played on Friday by posting a 6-0, 6-4 score.

After the Wolf Pack tied the team score at 2-2 by winning the next singles, the day's overall result fell on the shoulders of the six players still competing on the final three courts. Whichever team won at least two of those remaining matches would exit the Marya Welch Tennis Center as the overall winner.

Competing at No. 2, Kristy Jorgensen experienced a rough start to her singles matchup when Sheila Morales won the first set, 6-1. But Jorgensen battled back to win the next set, 6-2, then broke Morales' serve and held on to with the third set, 6-4.

With Jorgensen's result, Nevada now faced a precarious situation: The Wolf Pack would need to win the final two singles events to open their road trip with a victory.

That never came close to happening since UC Davis won both remaining matches.

Tiffany Pham's straight-set result officially extended the Aggies' win streak to four; after her 6-2, 6-3 victory against Blaga Delic became official, Jessie Lee capped her hard-fought comeback with a 7-5 third set score.

Lee won the first set of her contest vs. Adriana Gergelyova, 6-3, before dropping the second set by the same score.

By winning five of the six singles matches, UC Davis collected its sixth win in the last seven matches played, and pushed its overall record above .500 since Feb. 13 when the Aggies fell to 2-3 overall after losing to No. 21 UCLA on its own courts.
