DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis right-hander Justin Mullins struck out seven in the opener, while David Langer added a pair of hits in the nightcap, but it wasn't enough to lift the Aggies as visiting Hawai'i swept a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon by the scores of 5-0 and 7-2 at Dobbins Stadium.
UC Davis suffered its second series sweep of the season, falling to 8-18 overall and 1-5 in Big West Conference play. The Rainbow Warriors, who swept the series after a 6-5 win in extra innings on Friday, improved to 16-15 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
In the opener, Kyle Von Ruden (5-1) tossed a complete-game three-hit shutout, striking out three, helping lead Hawai'i to the 5-0 victory.
Jacob Thomas, Logan Denholm, and Spencer Henderson, each had singles for UC Davis, which managed only five base runners on the day against Von Ruden, who retired the final 15 batters in order from the fifth to the ninth innings en route to the win.
An Jacob Sheldon-Collins and Eric Ramirez drove in runs in the third to stake the Rainbow Warriors to the 2-0 lead, and the visitors cashed in another two runs on another run-scoring single by Ramirez in the eighth for a cushion. Hawai'i added a run in the ninth on a wild pitch, but that was more than enough for Von Ruden, who walked only one.
Mullins (0-3) had a solid outing, allowing just two runs on six hits over seven innings in the start, falling just one strikeout shy of matching his career high of eight set earlier this year against Portland on Feb. 20. His 107 pitches were a season high as he stranded four base runners during his time on the mound -- three in scoring position -- to keep his team close.
In the nightcap, the Rainbow Warriors used a four-run third inning to break-up a scoreless deadlock, sending eight batters to the plate en route to the 7-2 victory.
Josh Rojas had an RBI single to start the scoring and was joined by Sheldon-Collins (RBI single) and Marcus Doi (two-run double) in the frame for a 4-0 lead.
The Aggies scored their first run in just over 24 innings with an unearned tally in the sixth as Brad Pluschkell singled to lead-off the inning, moved to second on a walk by Tanner Bily, and scored three batters later when a ball rolled to the left side by Guillermo Salazar was misplayed, allowing Pluschkell to score and cutting the deficit to 4-1.
Another big inning for Hawai'i put the game out of reach as Doi had a two-run single and Chayse Ka'aua scored another on a fielder's choice to make it 7-1.
A one-out rally in the ninth produced the Aggies' final run of the contest as Ignacio Diaz reached on a one-out walk, moved to second on a pinch-hit single by Alex Aguiar, and scored when Ryan Hooper dropped a single into right field for an RBI to make it 7-2. However, reliever Kyle Mitchell closed the door, getting a come backer to the mound and a pop up to short to end the game.
Alex Hatch (3-3) earned the win for Hawai'i, allowing an unearned run on four hits while striking out five over seven innings before turning it over to the bullpen. Nat Hamby (1-2) suffered the loss for UC Davis, allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out a pair over 4.1 innings of work.
Freshman David Langer had two hits in Sunday's second game -- his third multi-hit game of the year.
Without a mid-week game to break up the week, UC Davis returns to the diamond next weekend, opening a three-game series at Cal State Fullerton on April 15 at 7:00 p.m. The series opener will be streamed live on ESPN3.com.
Games two and three of the series in Orange County are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday (April 16) and 1 p.m on Sunday (April 17) at Goodwin Field.
