DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis freshman Logan Denholm slugged the first home run of his career to get the Aggies on the board in the eighth, but six Nevada pitchers made three early runs stand up, lifting the visiting Wolf Pack to a 3-1 win over the Aggies on Tuesday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
UC Davis lost its third straight game to fall to 6-13 overall on the season heading into this weekend's Big West Conference-opening series at UC Riverside in Southern California. Nevada improved to 11-12 overall with the win, limiting the Aggies to just four hits on the day.
Denholm's blast led-off the eighth inning for the Aggies, as the freshman took the second pitch he saw from reliever Taylor Miller down the line and over the wall in left to break up the shutout. Back-to-back singles from Spencer Henderson (his first hit of the season) and Cameron Briggs, along with an error on Brad Pluschkell's sacrifice attempt, loaded the bases for the Aggies with no outs, but UC Davis was unable to capitalize.
A ground ball to third saw the Wolf Pack throw out the lead runner at the plate for the first out before third baseman Bryce Greager made a nice back-handed stop at the bag on a ball hit tight down the line by Jacob Thomas and was able to turn a double play to end the inning.
Closer Evan McMahan was able to shut the door with a perfect ninth on a pair of ground balls and a pop-up, earning his third save of the year.
Zach Wilkins (3-2) was credited with the win for Nevada on a designated staff day, allowing one hit and striking out a pair over three innings in the start. Five other pitchers then combined to stymie the Aggie bats -- four of those combining to throw six innings of shutout baseball without allowing a hit and striking out five.
Starter Matt Blais (1-2) suffered the loss, allowing a first inning run on three hits over four innings, striking out two.
Following a lead-off double by Trenton Brooks and a wild pitch, T.J. Friedl was able to put the Wolf Pack on the board first with an RBI groundout in the opening frame, and Nevada tacked on two more in the fifth off reliever Chris Brown, who loaded the bases on three walks before Cole Krzmarzick lofted a single to left, scoring a pair before he was thrown out at second trying to take an extra base.
Pluschkell had the Aggies' first hit of the day, a two-out triple that pinballed around the right-field corner, but UC Davis was unable to bring him home as Wilkins induced an inning-ending fly ball to work out of trouble. The Aggies were able to manage just three base runners in the first seven innings, adding a hit by pitch from Jacob Thomas in the fourth and a walk to Tanner Bily in the seventh.
Justin Hazard and Krzmarzick each had two hits on the day to lead Nevada, while the top three hitters in the Wolf Pack lineup combined for seven walks in 15 plate appearances. The Wolf Pack stranded 10 runners on base for the game, seven of those in scoring position, as the UC Davis defense turned a pair of double plays to end the first and eighth innings.
The Aggies' series against the Highlanders begins on Friday (April 1) at 6 p.m. at the Riverside Sports Complex with freshman left-hander Robert Garcia scheduled to take the mound for UC Davis. Games two and three on Saturday (April 2) and Sunday (April 3) are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
