DAVIS, Calif. - To say that UC Davis was efficient in Tuesday's non-conference match at the Marya Welch Tennis Center is an understatement since women's tennis needed slightly more than a couple of hours to easily defeat Eastern Washington, and open its season-ending eight-match homestand with a 5-2 win.
The Aggies will enter Thursday's 11 a.m. Big West home dual, versus UC Irvine, with a 6-8 record while the Eagles will continue their Northern California road trip with a 9-7 mark.
All three doubles contests posted identical 6-3 scores; by winning two of the three matchups, UC Davis secured its first team point less than 45 minutes after first serve.
Placing the Aggies one win away from securing the doubles point were Tiffany Pham and Alex Huie. The first doubles match to finish this morning, Pham and Huie registered their second straight win and improved their dual record to 5-4 in the process.
By virtue of their point-clinching result, Lani-Rae Green and Jessie Lee improved to 7-3, in their last 10 played, placed the Aggies in a favorable position and continued a recent trend.
In its last three wins, UC Davis jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by collecting the doubles point.
All six singles matches between the Aggies and Eagles were won in straight sets; after starting their day with positive doubles results, both Pham and Lee capped a perfect afternoon with singles victories.
Competing at position No. 5, Pham was pushed by Erin Blessing in the second set, pulled away in the latter portion of her match and earned UC Davis' fifth, and final team point with her 6-3, 7-5 result. The senior Aggie pushed her spring record to 5-1 with her third singles victory in a row.
Lee, the third Aggie to finish her respective singles match, only gave up three games combined against Rachel Swindell, and tied the overall match at 2-2 thanks to her 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3.
After falling behind early, the first two singles contests to end fell in EWU's favor, giving the Eagles a brief 2-1 lead early in the round. Starting with Lee's result, the Aggies won the remaining matches in progress to top Eastern Washington in come-from-behind fashion.
Kristy Jorgensen won her third singles match this spring, at the No. 2 position, by downing Moira Hedberg, 6-4, 6-3. In addition to winning her second singles event in as many matches, her point broke a 2-2 team tie to give the Aggies the lead for good.
UC Davis' singles push continued with another victory from Samantha Martino. As was the case with her teammate Pham, she was challenged in the second set after winning the first one by a 6-3 score. And as was the case on court No. 4, Martino pulled away and posted a 7-5 second set score to earn another team point.
With the win, Martino remains undefeated at singles No. 6.
Women's tennis will compete in the second match of its lengthy homestand when UC Irvine visits Davis for a Big West dual.
The Aggies opened the season with back-to-back victories until Santa Clara spoiled UC Davis' bid for a three-match win streak; the team's second opportunity of the season to win three in a row will start Thursday morning at 11 a.m.
