ATLANTA -- UC Davis junior Hilvy Cheung opened her stay at the 2016 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships with a 31st-place finish during the prelims of 100 fly on Friday morning at the McAuley Aquatic Center on the campus of Georgia Tech in Atlanta.
Making her second appearance at the NCAA Championships as an Aggie, Cheung touched in a time of 53.03 -- her second fastest time of the season behind only her school-record time of 52.73 set in the finals of the event at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Feb. 19.
Entering the meet ranked 36th in the field, the finish was 18 spots better than her NCAA debut as a freshman in 2014 when Cheung ended up 49th overall with a time of 53.80.
Cheung closes out her stay in Atlanta on Saturday with the 200 fly beginning with the prelims at 7:00 a.m. PT. If she advances, the finals begin at 3:00 p.m. PT. The preliminary round races will be streamed live, along with live scoring, on NCAA.com, with the finals shown live on ESPN3.com.
