TEMPE, Ariz. -- Held to just six hits through the first eight innings, the UC Davis baseball team rallied for a huge ninth inning, scoring five times in its final at-bats to tie the game before host Arizona State pulled out a 6-5 victory in 11 innings on Friday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
After battling through an 11-inning victory over South Dakota State on Wednesday, the Aggies had their brief two-game winning streak snapped, falling to 5-8 overall on the year. The Sun Devils improved to 11-3 with the win, winning their sixth straight.
Newcomers Jacob Thomas and Logan Denholm each finished with three hits to pace UC Davis, which sent nine batters to the plate in the ninth inning to tie the game. After pinch-hitter Cameron Briggs led off the inning with a single to left, sophomore Guillermo Salazar followed with a pinch-hit walk to put two on.
Cameron Olson and Denholm then followed with back-to-back RBI singles to get the Aggies on the board, before UC Davis quickly reloaded the bases on a pinch-hit single by Alex Roeser. A passed ball made it a two-run game, before an error on a ground ball by Ignacio Diaz and a sacrifice fly from Alex Aguiar tied things up and forced extra innings.
The Aggies got a double play to end the bottom of the ninth and stranded the potential winning run at third in the 10th following a lead-off hit batter, before ASU manufactured the winning run in the 11th with two outs. A ground ball and a strikeout put UC Davis on the verge of a 12th frame, but three straight singles -- the last off the bat of Brian Serven that scored David Greer to end the game.
Sophomore Blake Peters (2-1), who hadn't allowed a run all season, suffered the hard-luck loss, allowing three hits and striking out one in 2.1 innings of work. Matt Blais started and was relieved by freshman Blake Hannah in the sixth, the latter shutting out the Sun Devil offense over 3.1 hitless innings of work, striking out a pair.
Eder Erives (2-0) earned the win in relief for Arizona State, allowing an unearned run on one hit, walking two and striking out three over the final three innings of the game.
Denholm's day at the plate marked his third multi-hit game of the season and allowed the freshman to reach base safely for the eighth consecutive game -- the second longest streak by an Aggie hitter this season (Alex Aguiar with nine). Thomas' three hits tied his career high and gave him four multi-hit games on the year, matching teammates Ryan Anderson and Tanner Bily for the team lead.
The two teams return to the diamond on Saturday night at 6:30 p.m., with junior RHP Justin Mullins scheduled to take the mound for UC Davis.
