Aggies edged by Aztecs in non-conference thriller

SAN DIEGO - UC Davis and San Diego State split the six singles matches played during Saturday's non-conference match at the Aztec Tennis Center in San Diego, and the doubles point ended up being the difference as the Aztecs were pushed to their limit by a Aggies squad that narrowly dropped its hard-fought dual by a 4-3 score.

UC Davis will enter Sunday's match at UC San Diego with a 2-2 overall record while SDSU improves to 2-2 with its result.

San Diego State started the afternoon by winning the doubles point; Kristy Jorgensen and Lani-Rae Green defeated the Aztecs' No. 1 pairing in Isabelle Hoorn and Taylor Lederman, but that result was sandwiched between two wins by the host team.

Leading 1-0, SDSU took the first two singles matches before UC Davis stormed back and pulled within striking distance thanks to back-to-back wins by Kamila Kecki and Frederique Sleiffer.

Kecki earned the Aggies' first team point by defeating Dora Somoracz, 6-2, 6-3, which was followed by another straight-set victory from her teammate.

Even though the first set needed a tiebreak, Sleiffer pulled away when it mattered the most. After winning the tiebreaker by a 7-3 result, the junior Aggie breezed through the second set to post a 6-2 score, and pull UC Davis within one team point of the Aztecs.

With the day's overall result down to the final two singles matches that were in progress, everyone keenly watched the action that took place on those two crucial courts. Final results were posted within minutes from one another; after dropping the first frame, Green battled back and, thanks to a gutsy effort, won the final two sets, 6-3, 6-4, to earn UC Davis' third team point.

Entering singles play with a 1-0 lead thanks to its doubles results, an exciting afternoon of tennis was decided by that narrow margin since San Diego State collected a win in the other singles matchup.

A two-match swing through San Diego will end at the Northview Tennis Courts Sunday afternoon when the Aggies face the Tritons at 11 a.m.
