Box Score

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The UC Davis baseball team rallied back from a pair of four-run deficits to take the lead late, but Utah Valley scored three runs in the final three innings to edge the Aggies in a 10-8 slugfest to close out the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament in Santa Clara, Calif., on Sunday.

UC Davis finishes the weekend with a 3-6 overall record, ending the tournament with a 2-2 mark. The Wolverines, who were shutout on six hits just 24 hours earlier by the Aggies, finished with 16 hits to improve to 4-5 overall on the year.

Jacob Thomas, Tanner Bily, and Mark Cardinalli, each finished with three hits for UC Davis, which put up a season high-tying 13 hits in the game -- the third time in four games this weekend that the Aggies' offense finished with that many.

Bily notched his third multi-hit game of the tournament -- and his team-high fourth of the year -- while sophomore Alex Aguiar, who has reached base safely in all nine games for UC Davis this season, had a hit in each of the four games, extending his team-best hitting streak to five games. Freshman Garret Kelly also added a pair of hits for the Aggies to log his first career multi-hit game.

Bily's first RBI single of the day in the bottom of the first got the Aggies on the board after Utah Valley came up with four runs in the top of the frame to jump out to the early lead. The Wolverines tacked on another run in the third before the Aggies began to chip away, getting back-to-back run scoring hits from Thomas (double) and Bily (single) to make it 5-3.

A pair of runs on a two-run shot by Greyson Bogden in the sixth (his third of the season) rebuilt Utah Valley's lead to four at 7-3, but UC Davis had yet another answer, pushing across five runs in its half of the inning to take its first lead of the day. The Aggies sent nine batters to the plate in the frame, scoring their first run on a wild pitch after lead-off singles by Thomas and Bily.

A walk to Ryan Anderson and another wild pitch put runners on the corners with no outs, chasing starter Jake Mayer in favor of Logan Hold to face Cardinalli. The junior came through, sending a 2-2 pitch into centerfield to close the gap to 7-5. An error then loaded the bases for freshman Logan Denholm, who followed with a single to right to score Bily and, after a double play that resulted in runners at second and third, Kelly capped the comeback with a double to left, plating a pair to put UC Davis in front, 8-7.

However, the advantage was short lived as Utah Valley bounced back with a pair of runs in the seventh on a sacrifice fly and RBI single by Bogden to regain the lead, and a solo home run in the eighth by Mark Krueger (his first of the year) gave the Wolverines some breathing room as the bullpen set the side down in order in the seventh and eighth innings, while working around a double and infield single in the ninth before shutting the door.

Hold (1-0) earned the win for Utah Valley, allowing just a pair of unearned runs on three hits in three innings of relief before giving way to Kyle Valgardson, who worked out of the trouble in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.

Cameron Briggs (0-1), the fourth of seven pitchers on the day for UC Davis, suffered the loss, charged with two runs on a hit in two-thirds of an inning. Freshman Blake Hannah got his first career start, but was touched for five runs on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings of work.

After completing their first road trip of the season, the Aggies return to Dobbins Stadium for the first of five straight at home, beginning on Tuesday (March 1) at 2 p.m. against San Francisco. UC Davis then hosts No. 14 Michigan for a three-game series beginning Thursday (March 3) and running through Saturday (March 5).
