DAVIS, Calif. - Alicia Paine pushed UC Davis' inaugural run of the day across the plate during the first inning of Thursday's tournament-opening game at the Aggie Invitational by drawing a walk with the bases loaded, Christina Guidry, the very next batter, drove in another with a groundout to second base to help the Aggies lead from start to finish and record a 6-4 victory over Iowa State at La Rue Field.
Andrea Reynolds earned her first win of the season, Sara Cadona collected her first collegiate save by throwing two solid innings and Brianna Warner recorded a perfect performance at the plate by hitting 2-for-2, in addition to recording a team-high two RBI.
The victory, softball's third in as many head-to-head matchups against Iowa State, improves the Aggies' record to 4-6 entering Friday's 3:30 p.m. game vs. Idaho State. Iowa State falls to 7-4 and will return to campus to play South Dakota at 11 a.m. and Idaho State immediately thereafter.
New Mexico will take on South Dakota in the opening game of the Invitational's second day.
After jumping out to an early lead, the Aggies tacked on another run in the second inning thanks to a sacrifice fly from Katie Robertson.
Iowa State did not score its first run until the fourth of the inning, but UC Davis bounced back in the bottom half of that frame when Kelly Zboralske scored on Brianna Warner's triple to left center.
As was the case in the fourth, UC Davis responded to a two-run Cyclone fifth inning by scoring twice itself to return the team's lead back to a more comfortable three-run margin.
Paine opened the bottom of the fifth by reaching base on an ISU error, advanced to second when Cyclone pitcher Mandi Moore could not handle Ashley Lotoszynski's hard-hit chopper, then scored when Zboralske singled to left field. When Warner, the following batter, singled to center field, Lotoszynski raced around the diamond to plate the Aggies' final run.
Even though the Cyclones were able to score once in the top of the sixth, that rally had the potential to cause more havoc for UC Davis, were it not for Cadona's stellar effort.
Entering the circle with the bases loaded, and zero outs, the freshman left-hander struckout Brittany Gomez, forced Cathlin Bingham to hit a ground ball to second baseman Meghan Bradbury for a fielder's choice and Aly Cappaert, ISU's most dangerous power hitter, to hit a ground ball back to the circle.
By retiring the Cyclones in order the following inning, UC Davis collected its second straight overall victory, second in as many seasons against Iowa State and third in the program's history.
Last year, the Aggies topped the Cyclones, 1-0, at the San Diego Classic.
