SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Zach Stone and Robert Garcia combined on a three-hit shutout, while sophomore Alex Aguiar finished with a career-high four hits at the top of the order, leading the UC Davis baseball team to a 8-0 victory over Santa Clara in the opener of the 2016 Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament on Thursday night at Schott Stadium.
The Aggies improved to 2-4 overall with the win, claiming their fifth straight victory in the series with the Broncos. Santa Clara, which opened by taking 2-of-3 from Notre Dame to start the year, fell to 3-2 on the season.
Making only his second career start, Stone (1-1) was stellar in a six-inning quality start on Thursday night, allowing just three hits and striking out nine to even his record on the season. Garcia came on in the seventh and was equally stingy, throwing three innings of hitless relief while striking out six to end the game -- two in each of his innings of work -- to earn his first career save.
Peter Hendron (0-1) suffered the loss for Santa Clara, allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits over seven innings while striking out three.
The 13 hits were a season high for UC Davis led by Aguiar, who matched his hit total from the team's first five games combined with Thursday's performance. Senior Tanner Bily added a pair of hits and scored three times, while Ryan Anderson also added a pair of hits -- including his first career home run in the bottom of the fifth.
The Aggies wasted no time in getting on the board as Bily singled with two outs and moved to second when the ball was misplayed in the outfield. Anderson followed and laced a one-strike pitch into left, scoring Bily for the 1-0 lead.
After stranding a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the inning, UC Davis put up a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth frames to pull away. Freshman Garret Kelly's two-out RBI single was followed by a single to center from Aguiar for the 3-0 lead, before Bily reached on an outfield error in the fifth, setting the stage for Anderson's blast over the left field wall to make it 5-0.
The score remained that way until the ninth when UC Davis plated a trio of unearned runs. The Aggies put two on with one out for Bily, who reached on a single to shortstop that scored Aguiar when a throw got away from the infield to make it 6-0.
With runners on the corners, another error scored Jacob Thomas with a seventh run, and freshman Chris Roppolo capped the scoring with an RBI single through the right side for his first career hit.
UC Davis continues tournament play on Friday afternoon (Feb. 26) at 2 p.m., taking on Saint Joseph's in the first-ever meeting between the two programs at Schott Stadium. Junior RHP Justin Mullins is scheduled to face Hawks' LHP Lucas Rollins.
