DAVIS, Calif. -- UC Davis scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to apply pressure late against visiting Stanford, but the Cardinal pitchers stifled the Aggies' bats, holding the home team to just three hits en route to a 5-2 win in a non-conference contest on Monday afternoon at Dobbins Stadium.
The loss dropped UC Davis to 1-4 to close out its season-opening five-game homestand, while Stanford, ranked No. 21 in this week's Collegiate Baseball poll, improved to 3-1 overall on the season -- all four games against Big West Conference competition following a series win over then-No. 22 Cal State Fullerton over the weekend.
Brett Hanewich (1-0) earned the win for the Cardinal, allowing an unearned run on three hits and striking out four over seven innings of work, retiring 16-in-a-row at one point before the Aggies finally broke through with their first run of the game in the seventh. Three relievers then combined to allow another run without giving up a hit in the final two innings, striking out three, with Kris Bubic coming on to pitch a perfect ninth for the save.
Freshman left-hander Chris Brown (0-1) took the loss in his first career start, allowing a pair of runs on five hits while striking out two over four innings of work. He was the first of four freshman arms who saw action on the day as Joey Chapman and Ryan Steindorf each pitched a pair of innings, and Cameron Briggs threw a scoreless ninth for UC Davis.
After getting runners to third in each of the first two innings, but coming up empty, the Aggies came up with a run in the seventh as Ryan Hooper was hit by a pitch with one out, was safe at second and moved to third on Ignacio Diaz's single to the hole at short when the throw went wide, eventually scoring on a passed ball with Mason Novak on the plate to make it 5-1.
UC Davis continued to press in the eighth against reliever Keith Weisenberg as Cameron Olson drew a pinch-hit walk and pinch-runner Chris Roppolo moved up 90 feet when Guillermo Salazar followed with a full-count walk to put a pair on. Following a pair of strikeouts, a passed ball moved both into scoring position and the Aggies loaded the bases when Weisenberg hit Logan Denholm with a pitch.
Tyler Thorne then entered in relief and uncorked a wild pitch with Hooper at the plate, scoring Roppolo to make it 5-2. However, the remaining two runners were left in scoring position as Thorne got the strikeout to end the threat and preserve the lead.
Diaz, Alex Aguiar, and Tanner Bily each finished with singles for UC Davis, with Aguiar now reaching base safely in each of the team's first five games.
Stanford put up a run in the first on a sacrifice fly by Quinn Brodey after Tommy Edman, who finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored, led-off with a triple for the 1-0 lead, and added another single run in the fourth on Jonny Locher's first home run of the year over the left field wall.
The Cardinal put up two more in the fifth on RBI doubles by Brodey and Nico Hoerner for the 4-0 lead, and the visitors capped the scoring with a run in the seventh on another run-scoring double from Brodey, who finished with a pair of hits and three runs driven in.
In all, eight Cardinal hitters accounted for the team's 11 hits, but the offense stranded nine runners on base for the game -- five of those in scoring position.
UC Davis returns to the diamond this weekend, joining host Santa Clara and three other teams at the Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament at Schott Stadium. The Aggies open against the host Broncos on Thursday (Feb. 25) at 6 p.m., followed by a contest against St. Joseph's on Friday (Feb. 26) at 2 p.m., and Utah Valley on Saturday (Feb. 27) and Sunday (Feb. 28) at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
