Aggies edged in rivalry match

DAVIS, Calif. - Jessie Lee won both matches played in Sunday's Causeway Cup match at the Marya Welch Tennis Center, Tiffany Pham and Isabella von Ebbe also won their singles matchups, but Sacramento State won the other three singles contests, in addition to the doubles point, to squeak past UC Davis, 4-3.

UC Davis falls to 4-6 while the Hornets improve to 4-2 with this year's rivalry result.

Lee and her doubles teammate, Lani-Rae Green, started the afternoon on a positive note by defeating Andie Mouzes and Emily McColl, 6-1. By recording that score, Green and Lee are now 5-2 overall, and have won both doubles dual matches this spring.

Sacramento State rebounded from that early setback by winning the remaining two doubles matches, and earned the first team point in the process.

By winning her second-set tiebreak, Pham registered the Aggies' first team point by defeating Mouzes in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

Lee followed Pham's singles triumph with one of her own, thanks to her gutsy come-from-behind effort. After falling 2-6 in the opening set, Lee powered past Daimante Bulatovaite, 6-3 and 6-2 in the next two frames to earn another point for UC Davis.

Von Ebbe successfully defended her undefeated singles record by winning another match in straight sets, 6-4 and 7-6, to bump her team-high record to 5-0. As is the case with Green and Lee, the Aggie newcomer is one of three players with five singles victories in dual competition.

By splitting the six singles matches, combined with its doubles point, Sacramento State departed UC Davis with a narrow 4-3 team victory. With Sunday's results, these Causeway rivals have now split the last four head-to-head matchups.

UC Davis' upcoming schedule includes only one dual - the first of three road matches in a row that will start on Saturday at San José State, and continue the following week.

Once the Aggies return from its Southern California swing, one that includes contests at Long Beach State and UC Riverside on March 5 and 6 respectively, the team will host its final eight matches of the season.
