MONTEREY PARK, Calif. - Freshman Solie Laughlin and junior Hilvy Cheung each captured individual conference titles to highlight UC Davis to its fourth Mountain Pacific Sports Federation swimming and diving championship in the six-year history of the conference. The Aggies totaled 735 points in the team standings, well ahead of second-place Hawai'i, which scored 673.
Laughlin crushed her own school record in the 200-yard backstroke with a winning time of one minute, 56.64 seconds for her third individual crown, while Cheung narrowly missed her own Aggie benchmark with a 1:56.52 in the 200 butterfly final.
UC Santa Barbara finished third at 617.5, Brigham Young was fourth with a 507 total, while Pacific (439.5), San Diego (285) and Cal Poly (234) rounding out the final three places in the seven-team women's competition.
The Aggies continued to amass points from their depth in the events as well as their individual leaders. Besides Cheung's first-place 20 points, freshman Eva Chung placed eighth at 2:04.77 while seniors Brittany Rojo and Sara Ramos advanced to the consols to combine for 39 total points.
Diving coach Phil Tonne's crew provided an additional lift with its depth on the tower. Freshman Shaifali Goyal led the Aggies in platform diving with a school record of 216.35, breaking Audrey DeNeffe's old record of 210.65. Sophomore Angelina Proshak took eighth at 193.70 while seniors Lucy Lafranchise and DeNeffe led an additional foursome in the consols. In all, the divers accounted for 43 of UC Davis' 233 Saturday points.
Freshman Mia Facey added a third-place 50.45 in the 100 freestyle, moving her into sixth in school history. Junior Kirsten Brand earned her second swim in the finals thanks to a personal-best 50.48 in the prelim, with freshman Iris Brand and sophomore Courtney Schultz chipping in scoring from the consolation final for a total push of 35 team points. Kirsten Brand's time places her immediately behind Facey in seventh all-time at UC Davis.
Other high Aggie scorers include junior Elise Roberts, who hit a PR of 2:17.05 in the 200 breaststroke prelims, then 2:17.15 in the final for sixth place. Senior Hailey Ferko won the 200 breast consols with her career-best 2:18.05, cutting almost two full seconds from her prelim effort. Seniors Lexy Troup and Cara Silvas took seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 1,650. Troup touched home in 17:10.19 while Silvas was close behind at 17:10.54.
UC Davis previously won MPSF championships in 2011, 2013 and 2014. The Aggies placed second to Hawai'i last year.
