Box Score Feb. 19, 2016 DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis shortstop Jacob Thomas picked up two hits, and Ryan Anderson qnd Mark Cardinalli each had a double, but Portland got seven runs during a big second inning on its way to a 12-0 season-opening nonconference baseball win at Dobbins Stadium on a showery Friday afternoon.
The game was the first of a four-game set against the Pilots this weekend. Catcher Cooper Hummel and right-fielder Ryan Barr each had three hits for Portland with Cooper knocking in three runs and Barr a pair. Left-fielder Cody Hawken added two hits and two RBI while first baseman Matt Wade homered.
Thomas, a transfer from Delta College, was a bright spot for UC Davis in his first game as an Aggie. He picked up UC Davis' first hit of the game with his leadoff bunt down the third-base line in the fourth and then singled down the left-field line in the sixth.
Anderson, a redshirt freshman from Pleasanton, added UC Davis' first extra-base hit of the game when he led off the fifth with a long double to left-center field. The Aggies, however, weren't able to advance him any further to cut into the Pilots' lead.
Portland established its big lead before the Aggies were able to find a hit, getting to UC Davis starter Zach Stone with its seven-run second. Stone, who allowed a couple of baserunners in the first but did a nice job getting out of the frame, was roughed up in the second.
Shortstop Michael Forgione had a two-run single to right-center, Hummel added a two-run hit of his own, and Barr and designated hitter Brady Kerr each had RBI singles to add to the inning. Hawken added two more with a single up the middle during a three-run fourth while Wade's homer against Blake Hannah highlighted a two-run sixth for the Pilots.
Cardinalli, who was pinch-hitting, doubled down the left-field line in the ninth, helping UC Davis put runners at second and third with no outs but the Aggies were unable to convert.
Jordan Wilcox allowed just three hits, struck out six and walked none during six innings of work to get the win for Portland while Alex Fischer picked up the save with three innings of one-hit work. Stone allowed five hits and seven runs in two innings while Hannah gave up five runs in six innings but also struck out six.
UC Davis and Portland State will continue their series with an 11 a.m. doubleheader on Saturday at Dobbins Stadium.
