DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis reached the midpoint of a five-match road trip when women's tennis faced No. 21 UCLA Saturday afternoon, at the Los Angeles Tennis Center, in the first of two consecutive contests against nationally ranked opposition, in as many days.
UCLA won the doubles point, and won the first three singles matchups that finished to down UC Davis, 4-0.
With Saturday's result, UC Davis falls to 3-3 while UCLA bumped its record to 4-1.
The host Bruins won the first doubles match that finished, but the Aggies rebounded to even the doubles-round score at one apiece when Tiffany Pham and Alex Huie topped Terri Fleming and Laura Luca, 6-4.
But UCLA ended up winning the doubles point by taking the final matchup to enter the singles round with a one point lead.
Against Laura Luca, Samantha Martino won the first set 6-3, before dropping the following one by a 6-1 score to set up a thrilling conclusion to her singles contest. Unfortunately, that third set concluded with Martino leading 1-0 since the Bruins reached the team point threshold needed to record the victory.
UC Davis will return to action Sunday afternoon at No. 60 UC Santa Barbara, first serve at the UCSB Tennis Courts is set for 12 p.m.
